Poteau, Oklahoma...anyone?

Hey everyone, I'm about an hour away from Poteau, OK...I'm right on the border to Arkansas. Anyone know any places around here to explore? I've seen so many abandoned businesses and houses and stuff but I'm so far in the middle of the Ouachita Forest where I'm stationed that I have no way to get to any of those places. It's a shame seeing all these places that I can't get to, so does anyone wanna come out here one day and we can spend a weekend exploring around? I see some promising places and thought I'd give it a shot to see if anyone wants to pick me up all the way out here in the middle of nowhere...

Aside from promises and a few friends I've made,
I don't think I'll stay here long.
With ease I leave, before my roots have grown.

Also...I only have internet for an hour every Sunday at the maximum so I guess it'll be hard to get in contact with anyone about possible UE... But hopefully I'll get a response before I leave this McDonald's or maybe next Sunday.

There's an user on this board by the name of dwtaylor999 who is, I believe, located in northeastern Oklahoma somewhere. He might be an excellent resource for you in locating interesting possible abandonments for you to explore.

I dont know of anyone in that area. And there really isnt anything that I know in that area worth a weekend trip. Poteau has a few things. There is an old water treatment plant N 35.05951 W 94.59866

How far can you travel on your own? If you give me an area, I can find at least a few things. There arent that many rural things out there, most places are centered around the major towns.

There's a state park over by Heavener that has a big rock that has what looks like Viking runes carved on it. Not really UE stuff but interesting non the less.

Haven't done much down there. If I do get down in the area, I did want to check out Redbird, an all black community founded by freedmen after the civil war with an interesting history. I've wanted to check out the Spiro mounds and try and find the remnants of Skullyville. Supposedly part of an old school there as well as an old Choctaw cemetery dating back to the 1830's. There were a couple of boarding schools there, New Hope Seminary and Fort Coffee Academy that are on my never to be finished list. Boggy creek had some historic significance and is now some type of park. The Heavener rune stone is supposedly of Viking origin. I love a good theory, but don't buy it. I also have Earlsboro on my list. Supposedly an old bank still there that was robbed by Pretty Boy Floyd twice.

Supposed to be some old logging towns abandoned around the area, but I haven't researched it much. Still have too much close to home to find. Careful in the backwoods, these are hill people and don't take kindly to strangers, lol.

I looked up some pictures of the runes there. I used to find runes like these when out looking for some of the old lost mines south of Austin, Tx. I have also found one of the old Spanish Arabists in a creek there. When the Spanish had to run from their gold and silver mines, they would make runes like these to help them find their way back. The problem was, the Spanish miners were not to bright, and often left following clues in trees, which may not have been there when they returned; thus loosing their direction afterwards.

Snake head; points in the opposite direction to go
Snake (curved line); go around something in given direction.
"X"; something hidden. Often they would drop some of their load, to lighten them up for quicker travel, or hide a clue.
Boxed "X"; Meant something, I am trying to remember this from memory.
Lazy "X"; area of attack, be careful.
Boxed lazy "X"; bad area. This could have been that area they had a hard time passing for natural reasons, or some other reason.
Double arrow; direction of water flow. This referred to a creek or river.
Single arrow; again meant something.
Lightning; climb, or high place, if I remember that one right.
Tree; landmark.

There is a lot of these symbols, but I do not remember them all, but this should give you an idea to a possibility. I would not be surprised to find an old Arabist somewhere around these landmarks.

By the way, in the Austin area, I did find tons of Rose Quartz, and smoky quartz, (remember Rose quartz is only found around gold deposits, and Smoky quartz is commonly found around both gold and silver deposits). I also found a whole lot of Gold and Silver float-stone in the creek beds, as well as a fossilized human wrist bone, and rib. I just never found the old mines, and the land owners would not allow me to look on their land.

I thought DW might find this interesting, and might even know some of this himself, part of why he has questions on it.
