uLiveAndYouBurn, Vadder, Injektilo and I went last year. It was incredibly boring inside. Almost completely gutted. Not worth the risk.

Also, as we got back to the car and started to drive away, we immediately got pulled over and we were all immediately handcuffed and searched. They told us they were looking for narcotics, because we're white. And apparently the only reason that the locals "tolerate" white people coming to the neighborhood is if they're buying drugs. They didn't find anything and they let us go. That neighborhood is probably in the top 5 scariest US ghettos I've ever been in...

I'd just like to ask that people please refrain from discussing anything about this location publicly anymore.

This doesn't pertain to Brachs specifically, but reading this made me think of something that I've been wondering for a while now.

In regards to the "24 hour security" people, I've seen them at a few different locations. Normally, its some dude sitting in a car bored to death. I've seen plenty of them sleeping and snoring also. Has anyone ever walked up to them and started a conversation?

I've always wondered how easy/hard it would be to get pseudo-permission from a guard to explore a place. I don't mean 7 shifty teenagers trying to get in, more like a 20-30 year old with maybe only one other person and some photography gear. More than permission, you'd be asking more for the person to look the other way while you head inside, and you'd tell them you'll be out of there within a few hours.

Also, you'd need to have the personality to pull it off. The major reason I've never done it is that I think there is a pretty decent chance they'll say no, and then escort me off the property making it impossible to explore that day. I haven't visited any single place often enough that I would be ready to just pack it up and head home before getting started. I normally figure for a one time deal my odds are better sneaking in.

Thanks ahead of time for the responses.

I would NEVER attempt that. A guard with any common sense at all (even a SUPER nice one) would not let you in. There's lots of other reasons I'm sure, but the two main ones I can think of are these: 1. Especially if you're going in there with photography equipment, it will be known that you are there. You're going to take photos which you'll undoubtedly post on the internet which have dates stored in them unless you remove them making it easy for people to find out when you went there and that he was slacking. 2. If you get hurt or die that's on him. You'd be asking him to put a lot on the line for some random kids (and yeah, depending on the guard's age, even 20-30 could be considered kids lol) and no matter how charming you are that would be a very difficult task.

Bump to mention that demo is underway, here. Sad to see it go... never thought I'd see it happen.

How fast are they moving on the demo? I was hoping to check this out in a month when I come through town.

Having worked security, I wouldn't put it past most of the people I knew to give you verbal permission, then once you got inside... call the cops so they could have a "catch" on their work record, and use it to get a better location.

Security is one of the biggest back-stabbing/lying/crooked jobs out there. (some of them are nice).

In another thread a couple years ago, I made an offhand comment to some girl that she put on something sexy, and go flirt with the security guard and see if he'd let her in to a place for a few hours to take pictures. I was *kidding*. She apparently didn't get that and put on a sexy pushup bra and a low, tight top and whatever and did exactly what I suggested.

And it worked!

I haven't been out to Brachs yet. It sounds pretty beat up though.

I have a feeling it was a bit more sleazy than that.

That's a bummer. I wish I would have seen more of it when I visited it. I wonder if they had to kick out the homeless people that were living there. You know, whenever developers want to cut down forests people argue about destroying the homes of animals and displacing them. How come no one ever complains about the displacement if homeless people when abandoned buildings are demolished? I say we protest.

I was going to say that you should invite some homeless people into your house if you want to make a difference and protest.

After thinking it over, I'm not sure I should actually say anything at this point.

If you do go dont stop anywhere nearby. My friends and I stopped at a gas station and very shortly thereafter got pulled over, cuffed, car searched and ids run for being white in a black neighborhood known for high narcotics trafficking.

Institutionalized racism. Racism goes both ways. Let's speak out against this.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

Everyone ignores it when it goes the other way. They think it's just white people complaining about being white.

I can't say I've ever had a white guy flipping out at me on the street and say "I'm WHITE, yo" It's just never happened.

It's happened in OTHER circumstances... Which I always found shocking.

It's not like... they have to TELL you. I mean, it's pretty obvious. Verbalizing it just kinda takes you further and further from the "equality" thing.

It's like "oh, you're <insert color here>?? what, so you want special treatment or something?"

So much for trying to be colorblind.

^Yeah; the first time I hit Brach's it was the first time I rode the L - and we failed miserably at it, so we took a cab and got dropped off a bit south of the plant. Only took going north 3 or 4 blocks for a group of idiots to blurt out "check out the white kids", or something like that. Nothing further ever came of it.

Also Stormy, myself, and a few others pissed off a fire department a few blocks southeast of Brach's last year because we were looking at another site. Same "white kids must be looking for heroin" bullshit; the firefighter yelling at us was white himself, oddly...

Demo seems off to a slow start, but seems as though it'll definitely be picking up sooner than later.
