Knife or no knife?

Here is the question, it's a real straightforward one, I would think that there is an even enough split for a pretty even discussion. The question is:

Is the benefits of having a knife on you worth the aggravating circumstances if you are caught trespassing with a weapon?

I intentionally excluded the middle in the poll to force a decision.

other deterrents like mace and pepper spray are also just as useful as a knife, and safer, because who really wants to engage in a knife fight? It's really all about the fuck-off-dont-mess-with-me factor, so unless youre a big guy that looks threatening as shit with a blade in youre hand, a much safer alternative would be the spray, as you dont need to look all that threatening to use it effectively, and the best part is you can draw it, use it and your possible assailant wont know what hit them.

regardless, I always have a knife on me when i go exploring. but im just saying there are alternatives.

i will have a couple knives on me but that is just cause i always do and am used to carrying them for my line of work. Usually have a fixed blade 6-8" knife on my belt (leave that in the car on explores) then a Ka Bar TDI knife and 1-2 very sturdy folding blades that are usually about 4" ones in my pocket and inside my boot (yes each of these serve a purpose such as a moronic coworker forgetting his and needing one). I personally am not really worried as whenever i've gotten nailed by police they either don't notice the knives on pocket clips or the handle of the fixed blade sticking out of my pocket, or when they do i just tell them that i will carry them for work and now it's just force of habit. long as i keep my hands away from the knives they don't care and just ignore the blades, never even had any officers cuff me and take them away before or give me a weird look. Most i've ever had is one officer ask me where i got my Ka Bar cause he really liked the design.

A quicker way to jail I've not found in Japan than carrying a knife, any knife. No thanks.

I have a knife on me for every explore. I use it more for lock picking then anything. As long as its small enough they can't do anything. Sometimes I carry it for protection but not usually since i can carry something else legally.the knife has helped me more w picking latches inside a prison when i got stuck between doors to doors that allow me access inside somewhere.

Other than my small multi-purpose knife which can hardly even be considered a knife and is instead more of a potential lock picking tool (I'm not very good at that), no. Beyond the fact that I'm a minor and I think that would make being caught worse if I was caught with a knife, I don't think they're necessary, or at least not where I go. I mean, a knife fight would be an insanely bad idea, so as a weapon their more for intimidation than anything else... I usually bring a pair of sharp scissors as replacement since they're still scary looking, useful, and I can always deny they are any kind of weapon if I'm caught.

What exactly would be the middle option? A Schrödinger knife?

I used to carry a knife and found it useful, but not at all as a weapon.

For defensive purposes, I carry a bat'leth.

Fuck yeah.

I would find a Bat'leth a little cumbersome. Do they make a fold-able version?

never carry em....in my experience if you pull a knife on someone, you better know *exactly* what the fuck you're doing, and be prepared to kill them with it. People, especially criminals intent on hurting you, wont take kindly to your amateur assertiveness. If they overpower you and take it from you, you're getting cut real bad.

As others have said, nobody wants to get into a knife fight, and there are better means of self defense. Your camera and loose change isnt worth dying (or killing) for.

I always have a knife or two on me when I go exploring. Usually a multi-tool and a regular pocket knife. Both live in my back pack or camera bag. I wouldn't dream of using them as a weapon, mostly they are there to be used as tools if a situation ever arises.
