Are you insinuating that silos have uses other than rocket storage? You learn something new every day on here!

| | | It was interesting to see the company I work for on some of the old documentation... As for your question...I'm a farmer so I got my own silo here at home...and during the night (I work 3rd shift) I weld missile silo platforms for the US Navy. So yeah I am good. (LOL)

Sounds like you need to head over there when they have an open house & take the tour.

this is just one of many silos that are near where I live. Back in the day, the 380th Bomb Wing was at Plattsburgh AFB. Plattsburgh was decommissioned in 1995, but during the Cold War heydey, there was a ring of Atlas D missile silos around the base. http://maps.google...98c41ecc1f&t=h&z=9
Of the silos nearest to me, the Lewis NY silo belongs to an Australian. I already posted his website. Now, the other one closest to me, Essex/Willsboro NY, is full of water, but has a museum over it. The people there are more than ready to answer questions, but struck me as stand-offish. [last edit 1/10/2012 1:14 AM by Samurai - edited 1 times]

Sambo: 380th BW didn't operate the ICBMs. 556th SMS was part of SAC's 820th AD/SAD, & they were only operational for about 2.5 years. http://www.556sms.com/

| | | That's very cool. When I first moved to ND (which is full of nuclear silo's, many of which are still active) we decided to go find one. ND is very flat, so it wasn't difficult to do. We drove up to the fence and looked out on the silo: it was nothing more than a little shed and a huge cement tarmac (with a metal gate in it for the missile). My dad took out his camera and started to take pictures through the fence, and suddenly a black military helicopter flew overhead and hovered over us. A black SUV screeched up and three army soldiers jumped out and yelled for us to put out hands in the air. We complied, and spent the next 15 minutes trying to explain that we meant no harm. They made us delete the pictures and eventually let us go on our way (after having had m16's pointed at us for fifteen minutes). The crazy thing is, ND is REALLY flat. We have no idea where the helicopter and vehicle came from, because there were no visible area's they could've come from. Obviously there was an underground area they came out of nearby. Anywho, this was a great adventure as we moved to ND.
