Thanks! Yeah after we got in and looked around, I started thinking we messed up and it wasn't abandoned since it was still in such good shape lol

1972? I'm surprised they were still making them out of wood that late.

We once had thousands of wooden grain elevators through out this province. Almost every town had two or three of them. The last wooden ones were built it the mid 1980's. They have been slowly replaced by concrete inland terminals since them.

Grain elevators are always worried about dust explosions. I wonder if wood was chosen as a building material due to the decreased risk of accidental sparks?

That elevator may have been built a lot closer to 1872 than 1972. Just looking at the beams in it would put the construction before 1930 or so. As for construction, most are now made of concrete and the bins themselves are steel, just for the factor of cost and that wood would not be practical due to the size of the places now. Virtually all explosions are caused by static electricity in a grain plant, with a small bit caused by sparks from hot bearings. Grain dust is as explosive as dynamite.
That elevator probably is not abandoned, but is owned by a farmer who does not use it full time.

Another big clue to the age is by what is missing in the construction...PLYWOOD!

This link demonstrates the horrible power of a grain dust explosion.

You may be right. I just found the date on a website that had it listed for sale. I would be on edge all the time if I worked in a grain elevator.
