Thanks for all your views. Looks like most people don't wear one, but the reasons for wearing one are pretty sound. I think I will look for a high-quality dust mask (not respirator) and keep in my back pack. The respirator looks too bulky for by current bag. So far I have been in large, relatively open air buildings.

Unless my eyes decieved me, I didn't see pigeon lung mentioned here. Preventable with a dust mask I think, as it's pigeon feces bacteria that are on airborne dust particles. On an explore a few weeks back, there was a big room filled with pigeons and the ground covered in their shit, for a few days to a week after (I forget exactly) I couldn't take deep breaths without coughing and felt general discomfort in the lungs. Not sure if this was an acute case, or just from all the dust in the place (I'm typically quite sensitive to dust, though I don't think I've felt like this before). People's thoughts on pigeons lung? If you're in lots of pigeony places, I'd watch out, and be generally smart if you're sensitive to dust. Grain silos/elevators/similar places will often have fine particles floating around in the air (which is why elevators are easily combustible I believe). To sum it up, unless you're in an obvious case such as asbestos presence where you'll obviously need something, know the place (what it is, what it may contain), know yourself (sensitivity/history/etc) and be safe rather than taking a chance and being sorry later.

I'm new and interested in getting out and around; message me if you want to explore. Also, check out my flickr by clicking on the house beside the colorful envelopes.

Just clearing up a bit of confusion here. "High quality dust masks" like a N95 are respirators. A true dust mask will do next to nothing.

An N95 only will filter 95% of air particles, not including asbestos.
They are "completely ineffective against hazardous materials like asbestos, lead and petroleum products." But they do catch dust, and mold.

http://www.ehow.co...tors-asbestos.html

So answer, it will be pretty effective... but not in the long run.

I wear one because I would rather be safe than sorry. I am probably the only explorer I hang with that wears one regularly.

well, if you ever hung or explored with me, you wouldn't be...
because I too, feel the same way... ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry..

BIEBER!!! Long time no chat!!!

People - use a damn respirator! I have asthma. I tried to be cool and not wear one and I paid for it. You get stuff in your house, your throat hurts and you cough. If I'm going to kill my lungs I'd rather do it with Crack, not mould!

I have the p100 as well - PINK!

I'm typing this with my middle fingers.
I love the smell of mold in the fall.

I've used them, but not as much as I probably should. Places I like to strap one on (uhhhh huh huh uhhhhhh) I wear throwaway clothes as well. Asbestos is dangerous, and wearing a respirator is a great start, but that shit STICKS to you. It will stick to your clothes and when you wash them, stick to your washing machine, on your shoes and most especially on your hair (I wear a hair net under a hat, both get thrown out), in your car, on your camera bag. Take one step in your house with dirty clothes and your house is now contaminated. Awesome, right? When I went to a plant that had various killer particulates I walked to a dumpster afterwards and threw almost everything away and put on fresh clothes before I even got in the car. Sounds extreme but I have kids at home and I can't have them pay for my weird hobby.

Indeed! you just havent seen me around I never left!

and I had Pneumonia as a kid 3 separate times... my lungs took a beating. So I too chose not to push my luck. Not to mention, my grandfather passed a year ago, from Mesothelioma. Due to asbestos exposure from working in the oil refineries

Besides the mask, I am wearing a climbing helmet that covers my hair very well. I am changing into my BDU's before I go in, and I change back when I get out.

I am washing them after use, so I think this will do. I have to use the machines in the apartment area, so I don't even know what other people wash in it.

I could do probably way more, but will not start wearing my NBC suit with my full face mask.

I think this might be overkill.

Well, if you're going to kill something, it's better to overkill it that underkill it.

having asthma, i use a respirator at a lot of locations. dont always bring it out but i try to... i prefer to limit what can get in my lungs as much as possible. people who say theyre for pussies are stupid because id rather not have asbestosis or mesothelioma when im older. but i do love the taste of that stuff, goes good with eggs

I have asthma and I smoke, and I rarely use them. If I KNOW for a fact that a spot is riddled with asbestos, and it's been stirred up via frequent visitors or construction, I'll wear it, or if I'm going into BIG drains I'll throw mine in my pack just in case we run into dust. Big drains can get super dusty if it hasn't rained in awhile and it's nice to have one simply for comfort.

I bought a decent particle respirator from Home Depot (the one SuchundFind is wearing a few posts above me). I usually use it when I go into more enclosed spaces that have a lot of mold and moisture (the basketball court at BSS, basement of power station at BSS, stuff like that). Helps me not feel so "blah" when I get home. Otherwise I don't use it a whole ton. I use it more at work when I blow the dust bunnies out of customers' computers.

Ah yes, the good old respirator with P100 filters and ensuing self portraits that scream "I'm hardcore."
