A portion of a letter to Bessie, sent from Scotland many many decades ago, found in an abandoned farmhouse in Wooler. The full post on said house will likely be up tomorrow. I transcribed the letter to the best of my abilities.

Were any of the letters dated?

It's not where it goes, it's where it can lead you to.

That's pretty awesome. One place I went to was filled with old letters and mail and such. I found a tax return from 1931 and a bunch of letters from the 80s and 90s to the then resident of the place before he left. I guess he was hard of hearing in his age and used several notebooks to talk to people and family around town. I could see his daily conversations from March of 93 to June of 94. In it he talked about the problems he was having with the house and money. It was actually pretty sad in some cases, but interesting nonetheless.

My favorite find was a geography textbook from 1928. With students names in it and homework written down. It had a stamp in it saying it was owned by the Board of Education of the City of New York from Jan of 1929 and was from school 155 in Queens. Thought it was really interesting considering the location I found it was so far away from the city.

I love finding stuff like this.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

A bit off topic as these have nothing to do with abandonments but if you all enjoy this stuff you will most likely very much enjoy this:

http://www.lettersofnote.com/

I have spent hours on here reading letters.
One off the top of my head was a letter from Andy Warhol to the Rollin Stones regarding album cover art.

There is all kinds of letters here. funny/tragic/serious/political
Sorry for the off topic post.
Enjoy

On topic, I have found plenty of notes and letters

This was on a office door at a prison:

This was a suspension letter from the department of motor vehicle to a resident of this psych ward informing them that their DL has been suspended:

Many letters were dated between 1918 and the 1960s, this particular one was not.

That is incredibly poignant. I found a room full of letters, Christmas and birthday cards, postcards, university transcripts from the 1920s and a licence book from 1938 at a house that was being demolished. Amongst all this was sepia and black and white family photos and albums, and water colour sketches. The next day the house was razed to make way for another villa-style mini mansion...Pretty sad.

Luck is loaned, not owned.

Jexta and I were in an abandoned apartment building a few months back. It was thoroughly scrapped and most likely inhabited by multiple homeless people.

Long story short, it stank real bad and there wasn't much to see. We did find this however which made the entire thing 100% worthwhile.

1.

2.

It is addressed to someone in New Haven, CT. It was found in Birmingham, AL.

The stamp is dated 1983 and is in what appears to be in Cyrillic script.

It says: (exactly as it appears on the post card, typos and all)

Yahsau my brother,
This is hello, (or goodbye, as the case me be) informal - in Greek. Yahson from the immaculate, sparse, mysterious isle of Crete. What was it, 3 perhaps almost 4 wks. ago we arrived on this mountainous island whose coastal cliffs rise straight out of the sea. The beautiful multi-blued and green Lybian Sea. What strange and wonderful sights Daphna and I have seen! First, the midnight sailing on the Ionioan from the Peloponnese - thru the night and the black vast sea - sleeping on the deck of the ship. Then to Chania (Xania) a small port city on the northwest of Crete. Then down thru the mountains - a hike through the Samaria Gorge - 12 kilometes - of steep trail and dry river bed - not always dry at points and had to be forged - knee deep river currents with full packs. Then the coast towns Roumeli Ehora Sfakian - Finally staying in Palehora, where Daphna and I built a hut on the beach and camped for a week - in rain and wind. Now it is bright and sunny.
It hasn't rained in wks. A few days ago, after taking a pension and looking for jobs (tomato picking) without success we took a hike along the mountainous coast to a small town called Sougia. It was a great trip. We took nothing with us and went skinny dipping on the empty beaches. Nude bathing is permissible most places here. This land is hard and craggy. The rocks will eat you alive if you're not careful. And the people reflect the land. They are hard, tough, full of tradition. Occasionally a bit of warmth will shine through. Hope all is well with you.
Love - Drew and Daphna.

It's probably the coolest thing I ever found.

I have a ton from Dixie Square but only scanned the interesting ones. (nevermind the GMA watermark)

From a woman who had her purse snatched only a few months after the center opened in 1966... her comments in the final paragraph predict the exact reason the mall finally closed in '79.

Response from the mall:

Someone was celebrating 4/20 a little early?

Haha, oh that last one was funny... Sad what happened to that woman though.

I found a letter once... Talking about school and life and such. Wasn't very interesting but it was dated "1974" which was kinda cool. Blah, I need to get out there more

I once found a letter in an old farmhouse addressed "To whom it may concern" and "Dear Sirs" by a teenage girl giving notice of her near future highschool graduation as well as her interest in their scholarship program. It was finished, signed and sitting on an open rolltop desk some 17 years later. The desk also contained a small transistor radio complete with period correct, red, Rayovac cat of 9 lives battery (it was dead for sure). The radio had her name in gold stick on letters on the back of the leatherette case. I also found her name in a newspaper clipping taped to the wall of here bright yellow painted bedroom, the only other "decoration" was a large Joe namath poster.

The house was quite odd, as if one day they all vanished. Bathroom complete with shaver, shaving powder, electric curlers, aspirin and such. B&W picture of mom sitting in a frame on a beautiful enamelled wood stove. Closet full of houndstooth checked suits and a hang on the back of the door rig full of ladies shoes. The kitchen still had the fridge with a cardboard grape NeHi carton inside, shelves full of home canned green stuff, knives, forks and the like.

I hit a goldmine for dating their departure, tax returns! 1971 was there and all filled out, 1972 was there and blank. There was USDA tobacco grower insurance paperwork and more canceled checks that one could count from the Farmers Bank, all of which were for very small amounts of money, many less than a buck. It was obvious, they were broke, a loan against their crops (only after insuring them) was drawn against with the candybar amount checks.

I know the names of "Ma and Pa" and their daughter. I have spent 23+ years looking at every cemetary both large and tiny in the surrounding areas with no luck. I once found little more than a Jeep trail with a sign listing it as their last name cemetary only to not find their names on any stones. I guess I'll have to break down and go to the courthouse and search for records though they may not help me since I am from another state.

Damn, that went on a longer than I imagined!

I found a ton of papers, slips, etc., in a paper recycling bin near my home in fall 2010. I've begun uploading scans of them on my deviantArt page.

I am not sure if this counts or not...I found a written message on a closet door belonging to a farmhouse built about 1800. I know this because of the history of our town, and from the way the house was constructed...hand hewn beams to make up the timber framing. Where I live, any houses after 1830 were made from lumber coming from a sawmill.

Anyway the note scribbled to the closet door says: "Albert lives here and had 15 kids just think of that!"

The family still lives in the area and so it was cool to go back into time when this note was written...in the 1930's or so. One of those kids committed suicide here back in the early 90's and it has been derelict every since. It is a nice farmhouse, and the new owners are trying to preserve it as best they can, but its slowly dying. With no heat inside and little resources to really fix it right, it is doomed.

There used to be an abandoned house between Warkworth and Roseneath Ontario, abandoned in '87, and it looked like the owner left yesterday- sheets on the beds, clothes hung on doorknobs, dirty dished in the sink, and compost (food) in the fridge. The really odd thing about the house was the thousands of unopened pieces of mail from the early 50s to 1987- this guy did NOT read his mail. There were personal letters, Christmas cards, bill, receipts, etc.

Interestingly enough, the house has since been restored which is surprising because it wasn't really that nice of a century home, and it was in awful condition. Certainly better than it getting torched or demolished at least.

Files in a case worker's house about molestation, abuse, and murder fantasies.

I don't have photos of all of them, my first visit was actually pre-exploring and I never brought a camera.

One lost among the mess was a childish drawing of a figure holding a severed head above a decapitated corpse clenching a machette. It said 'I fantasize about my kills'

One was two figures crudely drawn over one another. It said 'He pushes up and down on the child'
