|  | | | So I've got a small handful of locations currently being worked on, some set for demo, some set for repurposing or repair. Problem is the contractors...while security can't really do much...and are trapped outside...contractors wander wherever. I've even been caught by one in a place I had no idea was being worked on [he gave a brief tour, allowed ten minutes before his boss was coming, and told us what times to return].
I doubt they're always so forgiving.
So what schedules do contractors normally work? Obviously Christmas and Thanksgiving are your best shots, which have come and gone. I was told they don't work on weekends once...and a few weekends back went to a historic site to find they were driving around and using power tools left and right. This may be abnormal, it seems to be a site they're rushing work for.
What's the deal with contractors/construction workers? When do they work, when don't they work, and how do you keep them from ruining explores?

| | | | The only real close call I've ever had I believe was with a contractor. We're 100% sure he saw us (and probably heard us too) but he just left us alone. This was on a saturday too. They just work whenever until they get the job done.

| | | | I'm an electrician, and when it comes to construction there is no set schedule. If the job is on time running smoothly, usually 8 hour days, but start and stop time can vary between trades. If the job is behind then 10-12 hour days/nights plus weekends, especially if its a union job, weekends are where we make all the money and hell holidays are not always a given, we had guys working xmas eve and day after Xmas on the last job I was on.

| | | | I would say Sunday's your best bet. During Danvers demo, the workers were there Mon-Sat from at least 4 or 5 am until 6 pm or so. Only a select few, possible illegal's, worked on Sunday and never seemed to pay attention to much going on up there.

Agreed. It definitely can work, just take notice to what everyone is wearing if you want to get it badly. Maybe a clipboard, too. Just feel it out.

Otherwise you are technically an employee. Of course, before all the fuss, you can be an employee of a contractor. So there is no real answer to your question.

Not the same, but the general attitude has always been: no one gives a fuck. You can probably even talk your way into a site by saying you are there to take pictures, hell you might even get a job.

Yes it is technically against Federal law to be on railroad property, but unless you were stealing fuel from the locomotives, or thew rocks at me, I never called the railroad police. I have had people ask to watch the switching of trains at the engine house and let them, despite them being deep inside railroad property, and if people were exploring the railroads history without stealing stuff, it was tolerated.
If I still worked for the railroad and I saw people today rummaging through an old round house, or doing a Trash the Dress set, I would just wave and continue with my job unconcerned.

| | | | I'm a landscape contractor, never had to work around a abandonment, shoveled lots of dirt and mowed peoples yards though. From working with other types of contractors (concrete, plumbers, etc) I can tell you that most wouldn't give more than a rats ass what you were doing in a building if you had a decent cover up story and simply walked off. They only work when there is work to be done, generally starting at 6am and ending at 3-5pm. Contractors aren't a special breed of anti-exploration people or something, they are usually just simple guys/gals out trying to make a honest living. Also, if you do see that a contractor is in a building, don't mess with whatever their project is. Even though they are getting paid for it, it is a disappointment whenever you see someone has tampered with your hard work.
