| | | I suspect that when the MTA choose to make it look like a typical townhome, it wasn't to hide it per se, but simply to make it fit in to the neighborhood. We have a couple of telco buildings here in a residential neighborhood, they look for the most part like the suburban ranch style houses on the same street.

| | | In Toronto, we have a subway station entrance built into an old heritage house at Spadina subway station. While such integration of contemporary subway infrastructure into old buildings isn't exclusive to New York or Toronto, there's something whimsical and impressive about how cleanly they're integrated into these traditional urban houses. Spadina Station's Annex House entrance is quite ingenious and used everyday as a regular entrance. Keeping the original interior would be amazing, though walking into this old house and being teleported to a 1970s subway station with the signature interior design and artwork of the era is memorable. Electricity substations in Toronto are also meant to blend into neighbourhoods. The buildings they occupy are often interesting in terms architecture. The lengths they went to in order to blend into different neighbourhoods are impressive. You peer through the windows of these unmanned stations sometimes to see transformers in ornate rooms with marble trim and chandeliers.

| | | There's a Toronto Hydro "house" by my grandparents' place in Scarborough. It looks pretty convincing, aside from the tree growing through the "roof". (It's wide open in the middle.)

| | | This isn't even news worthy. That building has existed since forever. There's another one on roosevelt island, where they converted the old strecker lab into a subway vent building. Most of the other vent buildings around town are ugly, windowless utility style buildings. They're all pretty severely alarmed.
