It's a great picnic spot in the warmer weather, if you go when there's snow/ice be careful on the walkways, scrappers have pulled / cut out small sections of the boards just enough to let a leg fall through, and with all the branches/leaves that fall snow can cover them and disguise the holes.

One, a tree fell onto the south side walkway so go north side.
Two, are you talking about the perfect square 'holes' along the edge? Those were not taken by scrappers they are access ports for gate releases...
The biggest threat is the walkway under the trees, slick as snot.

When the animals take-over the city, there's not much need for the zoo any more.
But the specific reason was financial -- city of Detroit had to cut costs, and 'cultural' facilities other than the museum of african-american history don't have much importance to Detroit government.
You'll find plenty of on-line articles about the place by doing a Google search on Belle Isle Zoo
