|  | | | The other evening I was tooling around the Tall Grass prairie in what is turning into my never ending quest to locate the remains of the old St. Johns boarding school, and as evening was approaching, I came across this.
I haven't been able to find a scrap of info on it, though I'd say it dated from the early oil years of the late teens. I suspect it may have been part of the original Illuminating Oil Company, as one of it's founders had lived in the nearby ghost town of Gray Horse. It appears most of the facility was concrete, wood, and tin. There was one building that had a foundation constructed of sandstone, and was probably the original structure, with the others added later.
The Illuminating Oil Company originally had exclusive rights to the Osage oil fields, but never really developed it, and ended up losing the lease to other companies, which sparked the boom in the 1920's. It had been a fairly large facility, covering approximately a half square mile.
The sturdy little building standing watch was the only thing still intact.
(edit) Gustin Bacon Manufacturing of Kansas City existed from 1909 till it was purchased by the Certainteed corporation (which is the largest building materials manufacturer in the world) in 1966. In addition to oil field couplers, the company was known for it's train horns.
An old photo of the company headquarters in Kansas City in 1913. The company had transitioned to the production of fiberglass products by the time it was sold.
The prairie was patiently reclaiming the site, though you wonder what they'll make of it when it's dug up again in a 1000 years or so. Regardless, I felt it was a shame for it to remain nameless...

Nope, though I did find the old pole barn you had seen. The roads have changed so much, or disappeared completely, I gave up trying to find it using them. I changed over to using the creek as a reference, as it was still basically following the same course today as on the 1929 map. Using that, I was able to find what looks like "something" on Google earth. No roads, so hike I must. Thank goodness it's on the preserve, or I'd probably get blasted by a deer hunter.

Sorry buddy, but I beat you to it! I suggested 2 or 3 months ago in a PM that he should write a book about this. I love ya man, but the autographed copy for suggesting a book is mine! ALL MINE, I tell ya! lol
Seriously though DW, fantastic work man! Not many people can take an old slab and a rusted shed on a prairie and make a gripping story out of it.
