| | Looks like Murdock is coming down soon < on 11/21/2011 2:51 AM >
| | | Stopped by Murdock tonight with the lovely Abigail, first time excursion into the world of UE. Sadly, it looks as if Murdock is finally about to come down. The front gates are actually, for serious, closed. No more wide open front gates and an 'open door' policy for Murdock. The whole place is covered in yellow construction tape and there has been a SERIOUS cleanup effort inside. 1. Good old Murdock / Murmur
2. The floors have been recently swept, and all of the trash and debris has been cleared out.
3. Most of the few remaining pipes and conduits in the ceiling have been moved or ripped down.
4. It's so weird to see Murdock with the doors closed.
5. Some were still open though.
6. The old medicine cabinet remains, though.
7. I love this tag.
8. Good old Murdock.
9. All of the debris had been gathered into these large canvas bags
10. They were everywhere. Murdock was a dirty old girl.
11. Sadly, no force on heaven or earth could clean up the barrels of grease laying around.
12. Amazingly, however, they did clean out what was once the giant pit of pure grease!
13. For reference, here is the same pit, circa 3/15/11
14. Abigail tried to sneak into the shot :p
15. She's so clean!
16. Anyone lose a sweater?
17. The yellow tape of death.

| | | Sweeping the floor before demolishing the building? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

| | | That didn't make sense to me either, but there is a lot more evidence inside to suggest demolition over renovation that I didn't think to shoot, like some pallet jacks full of tools and shit from the building, lots of stripped conduit... Dunno maybe someone is going to renovate it, if they are, they got a loooooot of work to do, haha.

I thought about that too, but most likely they had to clean the grease and crap out of those pits before they could get the environmental clearances to do anything with the property. Sell it, renovate, or demolish. Usually any kind of "hazard" like that will have to be removed before permits are granted. But sweeping all of it does seem a little unusual.

| | | I can't think of any reason why someone would think it's economically viable to refurbish that place, I don't think there is a single aluminum wall panel that isn't punctured, or any drywall anywhere that's not destroyed. You'd literally have to just tear it all down and start from scratch in order to refurbish the spot.

I would imagine with the EPA forcing them to close, they cant do much. They can't dig, lead levels in the soil are too high. They can refurbish, it's too expensive, not to mention the lead and asbestos and who knows what else that would have to be contained and properly disposed of.

| | | And here I thought we were in some sort of depression. Sure seems they have plenty of money to keep demolishing (or rebuilding) stuff.

| | | isn't this an old lead-smelting plant? i love this place and may even go check it out while they are renovating it. I like the way it looks so far. it should become a giant Hydroponic farm.
