Ohio National Bank; Columbus, OH

The Ohio National Bank of Columbus was built at the corner of Town and High Streets in downtown Columbus in 1911. The classic revival building featured a granite foundation, limestone walls and bronze fittings throughout. Since it was a federally chartered bank, the Ohio National Bank of Columbus issued its own national currency until 1935 when the process was transferred to the Federal Reserve. BancOhio Corporation was formed in 1929 and acquired the Ohio National Bank of Columbus. The bank was acquired by National City Corporation in 1984, but continued to operate as BancOhio until 1992, when all of National City's banks were renamed to unite under one brand. National City ceased operations at the Ohio National Bank building in 1999 and closed the branch. A property group now owns the building.

The lobby was quite breathtaking when we entered...you can tell that bank buildings were truly built to impress. The quality of craftsmanship was quite remarkable. Even though the building had stood vacant for over a decade, it looked as if the bank had closed just weeks before. A large vault was located on the opposite end of the building from the main doors. The only area of the building not in great shape (as far as we could tell) was the ceiling of the top floor where signs of water damage were apparent. We found lots of old banking equipment left behind and even some old ledgers. Check out our website for many more photos, including a 360º interactive panorama of the lobby.

Yeah, that vault door is one of the most impressive things I've seen in my 11+ years of exploring...it was MASSIVE. The backside shown in the photo had glass over it so the gears could be seen but not tampered with. I wouldn't even want to guess how much a vault door like that would cost new today!

It is a shame to see such a beautiful building vacant, yet it is also heartening to see that there is very little damage done to it, at least so far.

On average it seems like it would be an 8-9. The place is usually locked up pretty tight and is on the main street of the downtown area. We got REALLY lucky the day we went to take photos...the front door was open! The owner was inside and after talking to him for a few minutes, he let us roam around for about an hour. It was pretty challenging getting to every nook and cranny in just a hour, but we knew this was probably the only time we'd be able to get in the place!

WOW, looks very cool. I am surprised it is vacant, I can't believe such a building and what it is used for would sit vacant let alone for over a decade.

Some people pay to have professional pictures taken when they are trying to sell something, and after looking at your pictures they look professional and amazing to me! If the bank sells soon, you should request some moo-la, or more photography time lol.

Banks are one of my favorite places to explore, I once went to one with a bar attached to it which was a weird thing to see! Vaults are one of the coolest things to see abandoned, especially knowing everything that was once in there!
