Refinery ruins (lots of pics)

Spanning over a large hilly area and deep in the woods, the Tydol refinery was built in the early 1900's and shutdown in 1954.

All that remains of the refinery are a few buildings, foundations and furnaces for the crude stills. All the processing units were removed along time ago, sadly.

Tidewater, a national company, built this refinery in the Drumright area. The refinery was the center of the Tydol community, spawning a school house, grocery store and neighborhoods. When the Tydol refinery closed, many of the houses were moved out or torn down. The Tydol community virtually disappeared.

Tidewater Oil Company (Tydol) was a major petroleum refining and marketing company in the U.S. for more than 80 years.

Many of these old refinery ruins are scattered all over the state, and VERY hard to find. This is one of the better examples. It still has its crude stills, which went extinct in the refining buisness decades ago, they are very rare to see still intact.

This was my fourth visit, and I suspect there are still some more things hidden deep in the woods.

Excellent find, and a sprawling complex too, from the looks of it on Bing Maps.

It may have shutdown in '54, but that glass door on the front of the office building suggest it's been utilized a lot more recently than that.

You would be correct. Part of that building was used as a small commercial sound studio several years ago. Now I do believe that building is for sale.

Very cool. FYI, Tidewater was owned by J. Paul Getty, through his ownership of Mission Corp.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

FYI, Tidewater was owned by J. Paul Getty,

If there was one person in Tulsa past that I could go back and meet, it would be him. The guy was filthy rich, and built a house in Tulsa designed to take a direct hit from a bomb (if memory serves). It's called the "bunker". Rumor has it there is an entrance to a tunnel system he constructed in the basement of that house that leads all over town. The house is abandoned too....

I hadb't heard that, I had heard he had a bunker at the airport where Spartan Aircraft were made. Interesting. I wonder if there is some legend involved. Check it out!
