..to grandmothers house...

This old two story farm house is all that remains of a once large family farm. Built in the early 1900's, the farm was located about a mile from the once booming town of Skedee, but like the town, it's glory days are long past, and it nows sits abandoned, occupied by nothing but ghosts of bygone days.

Note the lighting rods on the top. The last resident was an elderly lady who remained in the house until she passed a few years ago. Though still in salvagable condition, it's highly unlikely the house will ever be occupied again. The structure retains much of it's original design, with the usual additions of electricity and indoor plumbing. The exterior was covered with the once popular asbestos siding, used from the 1920's up until the 1970's. The roof looked to be in decent shape, though there are some indications of small leaks in the up stairs area.

A large concrete screened front porch, probably replacing a wooden one, and a smaller enclosed back porch were the only additions. From some of the remnants, it appears grandma enjoyed gardening, even in her twilight years.

The doors throughout the house appear to be the originals, as were the old casement windows, to which aluminum storm windows had been added. The entry door was unique and from the hardware also appeared to be original. The wood trim throughout the lower floor is a prime example of the hand milled pieces of the era and was still in excellent shape, with the original lacquer finish. The stained glass windows were a nice touch.

The kitchen had undergone an update, probably in the late 50's, early 60's.

The bedrooms and bath. Grandma liked needlepoint.

Entrance to the upstairs was from the kitchen. The stairs were typical for the time frame, narrow, steep, and without any railing. While the downstairs had been fairly picked over, the treasures were to be found up high.

Hidden in this corner was something amazing.....and huge!

The pieces were in great condition, but I can't for the life of me figure out how they made the 90 degree turn at the bottom of the stairs and hefted these things up the narrow passage way.

There were a large amount of old family photos, many taken in Kansas, where I'm assuming grandma and family migrated from. My time was limited, so I was only able to make a cursory examination, but I was shocked that this treasure trove of a families history was just left.

This photo was of soldiers in dough boy uniforms of WWI. May have been grandpa's unit. The photo was dated July, 1918.

I wish I had more time. I'm going to try and get back soon so I can explore more of the upstairs.

I really like this old house. I could picture grandma on the front porch, surrounded by her plants, treasures and a lifetime of memories.

Amazing DWTaylor.....I have got to get out more. Would love to find a place like that. Looks like they just left it the way it was when she passed.

It's sad to see places like that. There's one I always stop at when going to visit family in the valley. I absolutely love the house but it's just crumbling away. I posted about it probably a few months ago, Im sure it's on here somewhere.

Anyway, great shots/post as always and thanks for sharing. That piano/organ was awesome and beautiful. Was that other wooded box a radio or something? The fourth pic down from the piano/organ. I hope you do go back soon, looking forward to seeing more pics.

I figure the same thing. It would had to have come apart. I noticed the clamp on lamp to light the keyboard, so she must have still occasionally played it.

The old stand up radio looked in good shape. Probably still works. If not, I bet I could drag out my dads old box of tubes and get it working....

I feel like a broken record because all I ever have to do is say how wonderful these posts are. DW, you are amazing, these are beautiful and always well written instead of being slapped together like a lot of posts are. Thank you. I love it

Amazing, sad set. I would take that radio given the opportunity, ethics be damned.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

I give you credit for having better ethics than taking that radio. As others have said DW, fantastic post man. As always. What a beautiful old house!

Oooh la la — on all accounts!

Heartbreaking to see in that state, though. The craftsman style desk and unused wallpaper rolls would be mine...

Seems that the place lacks evidence of a chimney. Built with the luxury of a furnace, perhaps?

It is heated by Dearborn heaters. The large silver tank is for propane which would be delivered as needed.

This house is great! A delivery of propane and a good cleaning looks like almost all it needs to be livable. I'd even keep and use most of Grandma's furniture and display her photographs.

Another great find, excellent photographs and documentation by dwtaylor. How does he do it? Such consistently great work!

That's uhmazing! Would be a great restoration project. The worst part would be the foundation, from the cracks in the walls, it might have settled a bit over the years.
Looks great though, don't usually see old stained glass windows anymore. My grandpa and I used to make stained glass lamp shades.
Great post again!!!

I wonder if that was an old Organ or player piano? It is really hard to tell.
That radio, when I had my Antique Electronics repair company, I had rewired and got one of those working.
Fantastic set here. And some very good artifacts!

I'm going to see if it's still functional this weekend. Maybe recreate the tower scene from The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Or I would if I had the slightest idea of how to play an organ!
