Busted, suspended, and require advice.

Well, I'll keep this to-the-point. I don't know if this is posted in the right thread, but since i live in the northeast I figured this was as good a place as any. A couple of people and I were caught this Saturday on the roof of our school. We thought the building was empty, it was not.
Now, we are staring down suspension, and I, for one, cannot just tell my parents I've been suspended. It will essentially nullify my chances of getting into college. I do believe, however, that there is one thing that can get us out of it. Our school has a network of tunnels underneath it, to carry pipes, wiring, and HVAC equipment. One vent leading a concrete well outside has its welds cut, supposedly by students in the 80's. Its vent grates can be lifted away, and it leads right to the tunnels. Essentially, it provides a way into the building that bypasses all alarms and locked doors.
My question to you: Do you think that we might be able to use this information to bargain with the dean for a lesser sentence? Or would we just end up having our secret entrance sealed for no good reason? Or get in further trouble for knowing about it?
It is worth nothing that none of us have ever actually had to use this secret entrance.
I'm sort of grasping at straws here, but I'm not sure what else can be done. I appreciate your advice. One thing's sure, I'm not going to be exploring at school anymore. The consequences for getting caught are a lot more permanently damaging than anywhere else.

Don't use your information to bargain as it will never work. You broke the rules and you have to live with the consequences like the rest of us. That's the risk we all take. Apologize all over yourself and do the time.

Now, having said that, this probably won't destroy your hopes and dreams of going on to college unless you're trying for a VERY competitive school. When you apply to a school, request that you have an interview. Should this incident come up, be sure to tell them that you have an adventurous spirit and you love to explore the unknown to satisfy your curiosity about the world around you. (or something to that effect) Make sure your grades and extra curriculars are in order and you'll be fine.

The school won't and can't legally disclose that information, in fact, they destroy your "disciplinary record" the moment you graduate.

Fuck the school, that's not bad enough to expel you over, and a suspension is nothing. Take the time off and enjoy it.

I was given two weeks vacation and almost expelled for having the anarchist cookbook (among other things, which aren't appropriate for school environment but not technically illegal) in my bag right after senior prom 6 weeks to graduation. Never came back on me and I'm in college now, one of the administers who pulled me out of class that day wrote me a letter of recommendation to get into college, two years after I graduated.

The top of the food chain was pretty adamant about expulsion, something about not feeling safe if I attended school there. That's when you get a lawyer and threaten media intervention. They'll sing a different tune. Of course situation was fucked from the get-go, the two administrators who should have handled the situation were caught having hanky-panky and left the school two months prior. Not having more bad publicity with the school being up for re-accreditation the next year turned out to be a bigger priority than the "safety" of the school.

Well, it makes me feel a bit better that the record won't go off to college with me. I still don't know how i'm going to tell my parents, I've realized that this is the first time in my life I've actually been in any sort of trouble. I've never even been busted before.

Just up and tell your parents- it's better than them finding out through the school first. It's a risk all UEers take when they go one place or another- and it could have been a hell of a lot worse. Tell them what you did, and what happened. End of story.

As already said, trying to trade information (such as the open entrance) isn't going to work. Its' secret, so keep it that way. Own up and take the consequences, you'll manage along just fine. It's suspension, not jail time.

First, I would try to confirm that your record doesn't go with you.

If it is looking like you'll get suspended and you don't want that, apologize and negotiate. Maybe do some community service at the school or whatever.

I would go directly to the principal and explain your situation to him/her. Don't lie about anything else and let him know your intentions were harmless and stupid; apologize for your actions and let him know you have learned your lesson.

It's worth a shot to avoid any further serious consequences. My guess is they definitely will be calling your parents either way, but you should talk to the principal first thing. He at least might dismiss your suspension and maybe drop it to some detentions or something.

I had some friends get suspended in high school. One of them is now at Harvard, the others also went to top-notch institutions of learning.

I would, under no circumstances, reveal the secret entrance. Knowledge of it is an indication that you have been poking around before, and were perhaps planning on committing burglary.

You may be able to lessen your punishment by carefully explaining your circumstances. Say you were just exploring, that you wanted some sweet pictures (with your cell phone if you weren't carrying a camera) and that you had no ill intentions whatsoever (such as graffiti, B&E, etc.)

Try not to panic, and act like you understood what you were doing was wrong but not harmful, and that you are trying to comply in any way possible.

Not only is it likely to go nowhere, anyone else think they'd find it only more suspicious/malicious to show you've got that info?

broke your busted cheery!! you rebel!! Time to man up and deal with whatever consequences come your way, but it's probably nothing worse than a suspension aka free vacation!!

anyways, you could have been busted smoking pot, and sleeping with your math teacher, and I still think your chances getting into college haven't changed the slightest (highschool dosent mean shit really).

revealing the secret entrance might indicate that you were/have been up to more malicious activity, and they could possibly pin the broken welds on you if they really wanna be pricks.

since you're not in college, and are most likely under 18, i doubt you will be given anything more than trespassing, which is almost always under $100, and possibly some community service.

let us kno what goes down.

Don't reveal that entrance. Keep your mouth shut and take your medicine. I got suspended in HS - didn't affect my chances of getting into college one iota.

i got suspended for 3 days in high school for pulling a stunt.

the dean asked me what i planned on doing, i told him i planned on getting some sleep, he said "i hope that's not what you plan on doing" and i said "what else do you expect me to do?" he instantly reduced my suspension to one day.

I never understood the point of an out of school suspension, it's like a reward for getting in trouble.

Looking for people to explore/photograph with. PM me.

Thanks for all of your advice and support so far. This has really been quite upsetting, suddenly realizing that I am in fact not perfect, and like everybody else, I'm vulnerable. Up until now, I've been able to get out of every tight spot. But in the end I suppose we all have to meet our Waterloo sometime.

Well, I didn't tell him about the secret entrance. Suspension still stands, it's in-school, only one day though.
But I'm not too worried about that, it's how I am supposed to break the news to my parents. I'm sure my mother will be absolutely shocked and thoroughly disgusted. I do have to tell them, it's part of the suspension that parents must be informed. Any advice?

Sit them down, and tell them. It's really that simple. You're going to have to deal with the fall out from them, too. Just get it over with, instead of stewing and worrying over it. Explain what you did, what happened, and that you're being suspended for blahblahblah days because you went up onto the school roof (hopefully you didn't break anything to get into the door).

Then next time be more careful so you don't get caught ;)

I got suspended twice in high school, once in-school and once out of school. I never told my parents on either occasion and the school never called my house to let them know. I didn't tell them because my Dad would have killed me on the spot. Somehow the school never called either time, which was massive. I always figured they must have thought I'd have told them, haha.
