| | | Rhode Trip! (NY, Toronto/Montréal, VT/NH) < on 10/7/2011 7:14 PM >
| | | So, I decided that if I was going to do anything I wanted for my birthday, it would be driving to Canada in November to climb around in some abandoned buildings. The plan is to leave Providence early on Friday Nov. 4th for "upstate" New York, driving along one of two routes to reach either Toronto or Montréal by mid week (Nov 9 or 10th) and returning to Rhode Island by Saturday November 12th. Planned Routes- Toronto (via Syracuse, Buffalo & Highway 401) 1. Providence, RI (Worcester, MA) 2. Albany, NY (Pittsfield, MA) 3. Schenectady, NY (Cohoes) 4. Syracuse, NY (Utica) 5. Rochester, NY 6. Buffalo, NY (Niagra, ON) 7. Toronto, ON 8. Kingston, ON (Watertown, NY) 9. Adirondacks Montréal (via Syracuse & Vermont / New Hampshire) 1. Providence, RI (Worcester, MA) 2. Albany, NY (Pittsfield, MA) 3. Schenectady, NY (Cohoes) 4. Syracuse, NY (Utica) 5. Watertown, NY 6. Montréal, QC 7. Burlington, VT (Plattsburgh, NY) 8. Concord, NH (Manchester) 9. Peabody, MA If anyone wants to meet up with us at any point along the way, that would be awesome. I'm also willing to offer up (one-way) rides along the route if anyone wants to travel along for a portion of it. (Seriously. Do it. Megabus will get you home. http://us.megabus.com/ ) So far, the trip includes my girlfriend and myself, plus a buddy who will be hitching a ride to Syracuse. My car seats 6, and sleeps two. (Unless you're up for some "just friends" spooning.) This trip is open to anyone who want to tag along. (As long as you aren't the cops and/or trying to get drugs across the border.) I've visited some of these areas before, but not in the past 2-4 years. I have a pretty good sense of what I want to see, but if there's anything new or interesting that people want to share with a traveller, that'd be hugely appreciated. Some areas I'm less familiar with: Between Albany and Syracuse - Any rustbelt stuff? Utica, Rome area? Highway 401 north of Lake Ontario - Is there ANYTHING out here? Is it gonna be just me and some Moose? Rt. 89 between Burlington and Concord - Despite vacationing out here a ton, I've never really done any "urbex" out here. Aren't there a bunch of mills? Isn't Rutland an unfortunate name for Vermont's skid row? Obviously, if you have and details or specifics you'd like to share, please send me a PM. If you've never met me (hi!) and you're confused about who is asking for info, please PM me also. (I have credentials and/or people to vouch for me.) Also, here's my neglected Flickr page: Flickr Thank you a "wicked lot" for your help, and any info, time or company you're willing to share. (Hopefully this will be better than my last big trip, which started with a 7 hour drive to Byberry, only to find it on fire.) [last edit 10/7/2011 7:16 PM by BLKMSK - edited 1 times]

To be fair, Byberry was on fire 90% of the time. [last edit 10/7/2011 8:05 PM by Starman - edited 1 times]

| | | There are things to explore in all of those areas. Or maybe there aren't. Rather than having people tell you where to go and what to see, why not just leave things up to chance? Maybe you'll find something. Maybe you won't. Say la vee. But if you don't like the idea of trying to find things along the way, there's always this book:

I've been through a lot of this area before, specifically Albany/Cohoes, Buffalo/Niagra and Montréal. The point was to announce my general plans, offer anyone who was interested and invitation to participate, and let people know I'd be in the area if they wanted to meet up and check out something that they're more familiar with than I am. Anyway. Thank you for your input, you asshole.

| | | My original plan was to do central NY and head home through Allentown, Philly and then New Jersey. But two of the places I wanted to see in Philly got torched by scrappers on the same weekend. So... the hell with Philly. Maybe I'll head down there and buy a racist cheese steak next year.

| | | Leaving on this trip today. (like, right after i finish the fawkin bagel, yo.) Route - Albany/Troy: Friday & Saturday Syracuse: Saturday & Sunday Buffalo: Sunday-Tuesday Toronto: Tuesday-Thursday,10th Rochester: Oct 10th & 11th Brattleboro, VT - Oct 11th & 12th I have a list of ~35 spots in Syracuse, Hamilton, Rochester and Toronto that I've never done before, plus a few places in Buffalo & Albany where I'm meeting with people. PM me if you want a look at the list, or if you want to meet up. If you're one of the people in north eastern Mass or NH that said hi, that route's been scrapped because.. hey, it's an hour away, and I can explore there anytime I'm not on vacation. Thanks, I'll stay in touch.

| | | Check out the area's between exit 29 and 30 on 90. Herkimer/Little Falls/Ilion (heads up... lots of homeless people from my experience. Just be friendly/respectful but that goes without saying) Also if your in Albany you'll want to check out the Menands area (roughly exit 6/7 ish? off 787) Oh and Utica can be pretty sketchy. Lot's of places that look good for 'splorin already have people occupying them for other various reasons [last edit 11/4/2011 6:18 PM by KevBot - edited 1 times]

| | | I'm still digging out photos from this trip... It started out strong, but quickly deteriorated into a rush around the state, getting out of the car for exterior shots and taking notes. One place I went that I probably got the most mileage out of was this industrial site. Steppe

Most important lesson learned was, uh... research. And, you're not going to get to more than two spots in one day if you don't know where you're sleeping that night. People in Buffalo were awesome, two of the spots I wanted to see were gone though. I remember it feeling really empty before, but it looks like the recession really took a bat to that place. Also, GLF was in the process being torn down. I had a good cry about that while standing downwind from some factory that stank like Fruit Loops. My car's not a beater anymore, so driving wasn't terrifying. If anyone out in Syracuse, Albany, Binghamton, Wilkes-Barre, Allentown, Trenton, etc. (~275mi from PVD) wants to meet up, that's an easy drive so PM me you want to do a weekend trip. I'm up for it, I had a few spots in upstate that I never got to.
