Shopping @ Dixie Square Mall

Last weekend I went shopping at the Dixie Square Mall...
unfortunately, when I got there, it turned out to be completely abandoned and falling apart.

I couldn't have had a better time!

I was only there for an hour, and since I was alone I stayed in the more lit and open corridors and out of the store backs and offices. It was still incredible, though!

Pictures turned out okay, I don't have a tripod so they aren't as clear as I would like, I'm just starting to work on my photography skills.

Great shots. This place is on my top ten locations to visit.

Funny you should post that...I'm trying to make a stop-motion recreation of the Blues Brothers mall scene.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

Oh hi. I'm that guy who swam across Lake Sodexo with you on Thursday. Strange how people can meet in multiple places and not realize it right away. ;)

A better subject line might have been: "Do you have a Miss Piggy?"

Nice one!

There are youtube vids of guys with the same make/model bluesmobile driving through the mall sliding around and what-not, pretty stupid, but entertaining to watch at the same time.

The car was a 1974 Dodge Monaco.

That video was a clip out of "Return to Chicago" which was a documentary about the on location filming of the original Blue Brothers movie.

Pretty sure it was legit access.

The storyline in the movie said the car was a former Mount Prospect city police car.

This what they look like now:

I didn't know that was part of a documentary, that's pretty cool. I grew up one city away from Mount Prospect. The Blues Brothers is one of my favorite movies ever.

In the army, fo a while I was at a remote location with no local TV stations. We had a TV and a VCR and one guy had a tape of The Blues Brothers Movie.

We watched that movie a lot.

There was a power failure following a storm. We did the entire dialog from memory. The hardest part was fighting over who was going to be which character.

"Mr. Blues better hope the police get to him before we do."

"...and for the common good, I must now kill you and your brother."

"Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips."

In order to use your head, you have to go out of your mind.

About damn time.

They've allegedly started again with asbestos abatement; you won't see walls coming down until spring or summer if we're lucky. So-far none of the news outlets have done accurate fact-checking on the place (Fox says it's been vacant just 22 years and fire damage is demolition, and NBC thinks abatement was done Wednesday and the place has already come down. Hurr...).

Props to the Trib for digging this up, however:

funny i was there about 2 weeks ago. stood in almost all the same spots as you. it was great but i was kind of disappointed because it was completely gutted. i mean i was expecting that... but guess i hoped for more. by any chance did you go into the concrete structure that was near the big opening in picture number 16? i wanted to but the floor seemed way to sketchy

The floor in the Penneys atrium is solid concrete. You would've been fine
