| | | Last day of Summer... Wanted to Make it Count!! photos of 2 Philly sites < on 9/5/2011 11:45 PM >
| | | Hey, so I had the day off from work and most of my friends were out of town, ("down the shore" as they say)... but I felt like doing something different so I checked out a few places. First was an abandoned convalescent home in germantown/morton/mt.airy area. Um, I think you have heard of it. But I have never been and was curious. Place is boarded up tightly but I did find something that could maybe work as POE. I actually did not have my flashlight so I was content to just explore the grounds and take photos of the exterior. REALLY want to get in this one, have been passing by a lot lately and I'm so curious!
That was cool and all, but I really wanted to GET INSIDE of something... so I was trying to access this huge church near where I live that is for sale, but then I started poking at an old printing warehouse. I was so determined that I did some tricky climbing maneuvers to get to a 3rd Floor POE... but get this, on the way out I noticed that the freaking FRONT DOOR was NOT EVEN LOCKED! CRAZY! I did not even think that would be an option. LOL. This place was huge and I kept thinking that I heard somebody running on the stairs (there were 4 staircases) but I decided it was pigeons or the wind or something. still scary. hehe
All in all I had a great day! Wish some of my friends were around to keep me out of trouble. hahaha

| | | Its a nice building from the outside but dark and boring inside. Whats happening with the building right next to it? Also, did you check out the old mansion behind the school down the street?

| | | The mansion has been purchased by a developer and it currently awaiting refurbishing. The same developer bought the other abandoned retirement home next-door and it's fully active now.

| | | The exteriors on that first place are beautiful, but I think you got a great shot of that wavy floor...what an oddity.

Thanks, man. YEah, I was fascinated by the floors, too. In some places they had shifted upwards of 24" into a vertical plane. I took a lot of photos of that because it was something I never really saw in such an extreme way before. I only had my cell phone so the colors are off/ blah... First two photos are the underlayment... a series of wood blocks (vertical grain), and the hardwood floors were attached to that. I guess water caused the underlayment to expand and then once the blocks shift and pop there is no turning back. Expansion/compression of the building due to extreme climate must cause the rest over time. really cool looking. here are a few more photos of that in various stages:
