Chapel Hill Steam Tunnel System

So as I'm sure many of you know, NC State has a pretty well-known steam tunnel system, but right next door in Chapel Hill there's an extensive one - I daresay more extensive than State's, with broader tunnels and A/C along certain passages so you don't get that oppressive 100-something degree feel you get in the NCSU tunnels.

For those of you who are interested, there are a few access points, most of which can be reached by looking around on the outer fringes of campus. Look around closely and you may find them, or contact me and depending on my schedule I may be able to meet up with you and show you around.

Anyone else been down there or have any stories to share? Also: does anyone know of any access points from UNC's campus?

Uh, just so you know, it's frowned upon to post entry details and location names in the public boards.

http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=83700 goes through some of the reasons behind this.

Thanks for being an enthusiastic contributor, though! Just a little more euphemistic nicknaming in the future!

If we do find them, I'll let you guys know.

We get nervous when people push entry points in google-able threads. I know that the public safety director at UNC takes a frowny eye towards illicit tunnel entry (and knows about UER). Share information with your friends, not with google.

If I meet up with you I could show you a few more. Have you really snuck into the cogeneration plant?

PS: Some of them require a rope ladder to enter.

I apologize for being unsafe about the amount of information I've posted. Sorry about that guys, and thanks for letting me know in a friendly way (Avius and AnAppleSnail) haha. I went ahead and changed around the post to omit these details.

And @ AnAppleSnail - I would love to meet up with you to go explore the tunnel system more! I have snuck into the cogeneration plant, but via the steam tunnels coming up into the plant, and not the other way around (going down through the plant). I've also done quite a bit of rooftopping and some storm draining down here so I could definitely show you a few other super interesting locations. There are also two big construction sites and several cranes that are explorable on campus.

Haha, no worries. It takes a while on the site for your trust and optimism for mankind to be thoroughly crushed. I try to share my dismal worldview as gently as possible with bright-eyed newcomers.
