| | | Posted by arcanehl It'd be a tad difficult to compare code considering two of the three are closed source. Second, the methodology for popup blockers is quite simple: block unless the popup is wanted. Third, the Google toolbar in browsers other than IE is probably because its a very popular search engine, and its very convenient to have. The popup blockers themselves are integrated into the browser, separate from the toolbar.

Not quite - I'm pretty sure the popup-blocker and google search built in to the mozilla browsers is the same component as the IE addon google toolbar. Of course it would have to integrate into the browser a bit differently - but I'd bet a dollar they are the same components. If it is just an addon and they just add it on to the deliverable package then sure, call it "integrated" but on both FF and IE the same sites get past the blockers. I'll get some more specific details - but what makes you think it's integrated? The fact that it comes by default means it's in the kernel? Give me a break.

| | | You'd have to know a little about programming to understand that just because two things do the same thing and work the same way doesn't instantly mean they are the same thing. Google's toolbar for IE is built by Google, and is an ActiveX component that installs as a Toolbar Object into IE. It only works in IE, since IE on PC is the only browser which supports ActiveX. The Google search box in Mozilla is built directly into Mozilla. It has absolutly nothing to do with popup blocking. It simply places the URL www.google.com/search?q= before anything you type into the box and then loads it. The popup blocking in Mozilla works just like it does in the Google Toolbar for IE, on a simple concept: Any popup (javascript window.open) that happens during a time the user did NOT click (the page is loading, the page is closing, random times during the page being open) is cancelled. Any popup that happens within about 0.3 seconds of a mouse click or enter-press by the user is allowed. As a result, sites which open a popup while at the same time opening a new page in the main window will still work, which is why some sites still are able to open popups.

| | | Rather than regurgitating what Av said (had it all typed out too), I'll leave what was unique in the post: I vaguely recall seeing a Firefox plugin that allows it to run ActiveX, so IE isn't the only browser ;).

| | | Posted by Jester I'd rather have something show up over by 5 pixels than to be like the Mozilla users "damn mozilla won't work with this or that, blah blah blah" like I see in the chat room all the time...
|
That's a problem with stupid users, not Firefox. Everything on UER works fine on Firefox.

| | | Okay, I've gone through this before and I dont want to again. I use Opera, which works great. Every now and then it wont let me log into my email or some other places that need cookies and stuff. So then I use Mozilla. Its that simple. For everything I cant get in opera, I just pop into mozilla for a bit. As long as you dont use IE, you're all set.
