Hey, just wanted to report that when I entered the forums, I had two pop-ups appear. One was an error and the other was a Pornographic website portal.

Probably some spyware on your machine. Use Ad-Aware or SpyBot to get rid of it.

It's not related to the forum. Spyware, as Wotan said, is the likely cause. Or you just left a porn/warez site..

Download the FREE program Ad-Aware... it works like a virus check but finds all the spyware and malware on your comp. Those popups WILL BE GONE.

Or use Mozilla, which has built-in popup blocking and isn't susceptible to crapware like Gator...

I'd rather have something show up over by 5 pixels than to be like the Mozilla users "damn mozilla won't work with this or that, blah blah blah" like I see in the chat room all the time...

So many people instantly equate open source as automatically better. That's not acurate. It is potentially better. As of now, I just don't see it in Mozilla, maybe after another 43 builds...

I have no problems whatsoever with Firefox. renders everything fine (unless the code was written out of spec), crashes far less frequently than IE (once in a great while), and it's free, with no ad banner in the top bar.

The only point I'll give you is for the ads, the pixel and a half off is meaningless. Other than that, I can say that the current Opera has yet to crash on me in any instance, not just *far less*. I use it at work with ad displayed, and don't even notice. At home, I have no ads on my opera...

the best popup blocker i've found is the google toolbar - plugs right in to IE and works great - same tech they use in the Mozilla browsers for popup blocking I believe.

I wonder if that's the same tech used for the opera pop up blocker, since they have an intergrated google search bar...

I think it probably is - the same goole toolbar is built right into firefox and mozilla now-a-days- so I think it's all the same tech - I haven't looked at the actual code or anything - but the similar toolbars lead me to believe that is the case.

It'd be a tad difficult to compare code considering two of the three are closed source. Second, the methodology for popup blockers is quite simple: block unless the popup is wanted. Third, the Google toolbar in browsers other than IE is probably because its a very popular search engine, and its very convenient to have. The popup blockers themselves are integrated into the browser, separate from the toolbar.

With the integrated popup-blocking, like in FireFox and Safari, it's not really accurate to call it pop-up blocking, since it's not third-party software that automatically closes rogue windows, it's simply a browser preference.

I see a lot of people praising IE, but that fact is it's old bloated tech. No tabbed browsing, no built-in popup blocking, no google search. Add to that that it's incredibly vulnerable to spyware of all kinds... it's basically trash. I only use it on my PC because it's so freakin' fast under Windows XP. I also run adaware every few weeks. It's th only way to go, unless you choose another more secure browser.

Have you hugged your firefox today? I have Firefox and it kicks ass. IE is ignorant and irritating. I keep middle clicking on links in IE hoping for a tab to pop up.
