Time to start getting back out again! Just a "mini" post of an old bank in Glencoe, OK. Much of the Glencoe business district was destroyed by fire in January of 1914, I'm not sure if the banks predates the fire, but is is located on the edge of the old business district. The banks claim to fame was a robbery on November 13th, 1914 of $2,400.00 dollars by the notorious bank robber Henry Star, who robbed 21 banks during his "career". Henry robbed 14 different banks between September 1914 and January 1915. All were daylight robberies at two week intervals. It was the worst streak of robberies Oklahoma had ever witnessed, resulting in the "Bank Robber Bill". A $10,000 dead or alive bounty was placed on Star's head. Arrested several times, Star served several terms in prison, last being granted amnesty by president Teddy Roosevelt. He stayed "straight" for a couple of years, even starring in a silent film. He was unable to walk the straight and narrow for long and he died from wounds he received in a bank robbery in Harrison Arkansas in 1921. Supposedly, Star hid much of the "loot" from the earlier bank robbers, quote "...near the border in a place nobody could find in a million years." Researchers believed that this cache is hidden somewhere along the Cimarron River in Stevens County, Kansas, just across the border from the panhandle of Oklahoma. Ruins, the fate of all cities.
