Yeah, just let me know and we'll figure out a time to get together and do something. Maybe we'll go a little further west and try to open the Texas Door.

Great story! I love conspiracy theories, even though they almost always end up not being true. Conspiracies require a highly functional group of individuals or organizations to conceive and execute. Having been a part of some of these "agencies" in a my youth, I know its something our government is incapable of.

But just in case, you may want to build a Zombie house.

Looking through the tax records two companies show up; Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Trace Cyclotron Operation Inc./Trace Radio Chemical.

Both companies have websites and Trace even has other Denton properties.

Trace claims to be the "leading supplier of stable isotopes". Molecular Insight says they're "focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of targeted radiotherapeutics and molecular imaging pharmaceuticals for use in oncology".

The cops claims of radiation exposure might not be that far off.

Its very clear what happened here.

The company was experimenting with a new drug on captured monkeys from Africa. One of the monkeys got out of its cage in the facility bit a worker and gave him the deadly motava virus. And so before anyone new what was going to happen the buildings Automatic contingent procedures kicked in filling the whole building with poison gas and the a lethal prolonged dose of radiation just to be sure it killed everything. And thats way its still radioactive.

And unlike horror movies, it worked in real life.

The workers family's were paid to keep there mouths shut.

But you forgot one teeny tiny detail that wasn't widely reported. According to locals, the dang monkey escaped through the Texas Door and is still out there, some where. Ready to bite with the vengeance of hell!!

this reminds me of when i snuck into the UTMB building in galveston then finding files left for STD's,deadly viruses, and stuff.

i thought i was going to die. b/c they were using hoses to bring air into/outof the building

but then i realized they left all the stuff in 2008 cuz of the hurricane and had to a/c the building to prevent mold.

still thought it was cool as fuck. but i couldve been in ALOT of trouble.

theres actually a huge house here in Houston that takes up one block and it was built during the cuban crisis. so it has a big bomb/fallout shelter. and escape tunnels in the backyard

i shit you not. its pretty cool

If the local police confiscated your memory card with photos on it, the first thing I'd do is contact my attorney about some kind of charges for illegal seizure of intellectual property. By federal law, the moment you capture an image on any medium, that image is protected by a copyright and you have certain rights and priveledges to those images. The police have no right to confiscate those images in the field. A judge, under certain circumstances can but a police officer cannot unless he places you under arrest and your property comes under protective custody as evidence of a crime committed. Check the following link for more details. Your rights were violated.

Something about the building you visited and the response you got for doing so made me curious, so I did a little research on it as well as the one-time owner of the same, International Isotopes Inc. Most of this stuff is from link surfing, so I don’t have direct references, meaning you’ll just have to take my word that I’m not making it up. ;)

In November 1997, the Company purchased an 80,000 square foot
office/manufacturing facility and a 12,000 square foot warehouse referred to as
our "Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility". Total cost for this facility,
located on 12 acres at 3100 Jim Christal Road, Denton, Texas, including
improvements for offices, furnishings, HVAC, and a suite of production clean
rooms and equipment was approximately $9,300,000. The 12,000 square foot
warehouse houses the 42 MeV Cyclotron, donated by MD Anderson Cancer Center to
the University of North Texas, which has been remodeled and is being operated by
the Company under a ten year lease with UNT to produce short-lived and research
radioisotopes.

Interesting enough. The building houses a 42 MeV Cyclotron, which is nothing to sneeze at I guess. What exactly can you do with such a toy?

The facility will produce copper-64, iodine-124, bromine-76, bromine-77, yttrium-86, and gallium-66. cobalt-60, iridium-192, strontium-89, barium-133, and nickel-63.

I’m not sure I want any of that in my morning coffee. So perhaps getting in the door was not in your best interest after all, especially if the previous tenants departed in a rush.
Let’s assume you had made it past the exterior of the building – here’s what you would have encountered:

While repairs to the CP-42 were underway, designs for the
vault were evaluated . After weighing the overall costs,
advantages, and disadvantages of various designs against the
mission at hand (this being intended more as a tool for “R&D”
rather than a dedicated “production” facility), I3 chose to build
a single, large room to house the cyclotron, beamlines, and
targets. Based upon the intended target products and
estimated beam currents, it was determined that a wall
thickness of six feet and a roof thickness of four feet
would be sufficient to reduce the radiation fields outside
the vault to less than 0.5 mR/hr in any uncontrolled
area. It was also planned that supplementary shielding
would be installed directly around the target stations to
further reduce radiation fields. In any case, radiation
measurements would be performed under actual
operating conditions to verify that the shielding was
sufficient and, if necessary, additional shielding would
be installed.
The partially re-built CP-42 was then moved into place
and the vault built around it. The inner wall of the
vault was assembled using traditional wood frame
construction techniques. In addition, polyethylene
beads were placed between the wall studs to enhance
neutron shielding. After pouring a concrete footer, the
6 ft. thick main shielding walls were constructed by drystacking
concrete blocks. An interlocking pattern was
used to help assure that there were no direct seams
through the wall. The vault roof was constructed using
“Glue Lam” beams, each 10 ½” X 24 ¾” X 34 ft. place
on 18” centers over ¾“ plywood sheets. Polyethylene
beads were also placed between the roof beams to
enhance neutron shielding. Concrete blocks were then
stacked on top of the roof platform using an
interlocking pattern. All penetrations (ducts, wireways,
etc.) through the shield wall were constructed to
eliminate line-of-sight paths. Inside the accelerator
vault, all of the power and control cabling, plus hoses
and plumbing for system cooling, were installed under
a raised “computer” floor. A maze -- also constructed
of concrete block -- provides access to the interior of the
vault. The final “trimming” of the maze was
established from radiation measurements during initial
operation of the CP-42. All entrances to the vault and
maze are controlled with the Personal Access Safety
System (PASS).

That would be a cool room to see I suppose. Nothing like radiation mazes and six foot thick block walls!

Once inside the room, here’s the prize:

I’m pretty sure this is the “as installed” current state of the machine, but can’t be sure. The picture came from the Trace Life Sciences site. According to Trace Life, they obtained all of International Isotopes assets in a bankruptcy purchase. Apparently, making specialized radioactive isotopes is a demanding and expensive business, as this piece of equipment seems to have been passed around more often than a joint in Lindsay Lohan’s SUV. Given the present state of the building, I would assume that the current owner has decided to get into a more profitable field as well and left a note with the police to “keep any eye on that radioactive stuff after we leave.”

Now, I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself, “That’s all well and good, but why do we care about this?” That’s a fair question…

Another SEC filing from International Isotopes prior to their going under has the following paragraph in it:

In early 1998, the Company completed construction of a 27,000 square
foot facility, for administration, manufacturing and services located on 1.6
acres in Denton, Texas at a cost of $ 1,260,000. The Company is using the
building for equipment manufacturing and in January 2000 moved the
executive/administrative offices there. Also in 1998, the Company completed
construction of the building housing its 35,000 square foot Radioisotope
Production Facility devoted to the LINAC at an approximate cost of $7,524,000.

A 35000 square foot building devoted to the LINAC. How nice! What the hell is a LINAC?

International Isotopes Inc, an emerging producer of contract manufactured finished radiopharmaceuticals, radioisotopes, pharmaceutical grade radiochemicals and therapeutic devices, today announced the initial move of the linear accelerator ("LINAC") components into the newly constructed linear accelerator tunnel and support building located at the Company's radioisotope production facility in Denton, Texas.

"The move and installation of the LINAC components into this advanced isotope production facility is a major milestone in the implementation of our business plan. We will soon commence the final assembly and commissioning of the LINAC in preparation for producing radioisotope products," according to Tommy Thompson, Executive Vice President and COO. "We are very pleased with the results of our fast-track construction program and the tremendous efforts of our employees to accomplish this major milestone."

So it’s another particle accelerator, probably bigger and better than the old thing they picked up from UNT a while back. That’s a good thing, as it was getting kind of worn out, I guess. Where would you get such a device, anyway?

A bonanza for isotope-hungry scientists may eventually come from the demise of the $11-billion Superconducting Super Collider project in Texas (SN: 10/30/93, p. 276). A linear accelerator that I. Lon Morgan of the University of North Texas in Denton bought from the abandoned project has become the centerpiece of a new company.

So the original particle accelerator from the Texas Door now sits in a 35000 square foot building in Denton, TX.

To be even more precise, the accelerator sits in this 35000 square foot building with not one, but two underground entrances. Surrounded by a barbed wire fence. With what appears to be another barbed wire fence on the roof. Owned by a bankrupt company. Everyone needs a challenge, right?

Apologies for the long post – I know it wasn’t exactly an episode of James Burke’s “Connections”, but I did find it interesting that following a few links and making a couple of searches led down such a path. I’m always interested in the history component of UE, which is something I thought I would share in this instance.

Oh, and this is my first post, so take it easy on me if I completely screwed something up. :)
