Top secret government installation of doom, Texas edition

So this story gets a little crazy, but bear with me, I swear on the bible it's 100% true.

So, I noticed this place while driving around at work in the company truck. I pulled in and had a very brief look-see and decided to come back later and have a go at it. I apologize for the lack of pictures, but we'll get there.

So, I show up around 8:00 with two friends, and we start walking around the place looking for a POE. We make it all the way around, can't find a POE, and exit, in the process we had to scale a large fence and crawl through a gate.

The place was apparently some sort of pharmaceutical research place according to the signs out front. From looking through the windows and walking around the outside, the place felt... Strange. Like big things happened there. There is a monumental amount of machinery around the outside, and parts of the building had power. In through the windows, we could see in the offices that still had coffee cups and paperwork on the desks, hard hats on pegs, and pens in cups, that all had cobwebs and a thick layer of dust on them. It looked like something bad happened there, an accident, and they had to leave quickly and never came back. Fire hoses strew the hallways, still attached to the emergency water outlets, hard hats and respirators where everywhere, but there is absolutely no evidence of a fire or chemical spill.

We leave, deciding that the place is 100% worth a re-try, but we'd need kit like a ladder or ropework that we didn't think to bring in order to get in. We pile back in the Danger Ranger and start to leave, a cop comes screaming up the road and immediately pulls us over, within seconds a second cop comes screaming up, they block us in, and come up and get me out of the truck and put me up against one of the cop cars... Standard explorer harassment ensues, they question us extensively and the second cop buggers off to go check the building and make sure we didn't break in or tag it, and then he comes back and the questioning ensues. I normally don't really get phased when I get busted, but they put me in the spotlight of the police car, and they brought out a little PDA with a camera on it and they took pictures of all my tattoos, all my scars and entered every little bit of info on me, even where I was born... I think I'm in some sort of system now.

It was strange though, I've been caught and questioned before but not like this. The cops were very, very forceful, kept asking us about what did we see inside, did we get in, and then they took my memory card, hence the lack of pictures, and did a white glove search of my truck, even checking under the seat cushions and stuff. After awhile the cops calmed down and they started chit chatting with us after they realized that we were really just dumb college kids looking for a nice set of pictures, and the cop started telling us that he understands the want and desire to explore, and he really doesn't care about most places, but this place, man to man, not cop to criminal, is somewhere we REALLY shouldn't be. He told us that there is very high levels of radiation inside and the facility is being monitored by the Federal Government, and if we get caught again anywhere on the grounds we'll be facing federal charges, not just misdemeanor trespassing. He wouldn't give up any info on why, what's in there or what happened, though, but he did detail that the place has insane security, they knew we were there because the place has some sort of proximity sensor, so they knew about us the moment we drove down the driveway towards it, as well as VERY well hidden video surveillance.

I can't stop thinking about this place. Something happened. Maybe some sort of accident? Maybe they were researching something big under the guise of a medical research company and it all went wrong?

Probably not, for a number of reasons. It falls to the EPA, by various acts of congress, to manage the kind of hypothetical incident you're suggesting. Radioactive accidents are not just left alone, they generally have to be cleaned up.

Second, while it's always fun to suppose something secret is going on and you've stumbled upon it, the truth is generally far more mundane. There is no need to disguise radiological or nuclear research behind a pharmaceutical front -- it simply occurs, very much in the open, at places like lawrence livermore, los alamos and etc. An enormous amount of research is funded by agencies like doe or darpa and etc, with private partners, but once again these partners do not mask their research behind false fronts -- they simply do the research, often without publicly disclosing it, and rely on normal information and project security practices.

Third, this sounds like cop bullshit. Cops hate having to chase people down, and were probably trying to deter you so they didnt have to come after you again. If there was really something so important to protect that the site is monitored live by camera and sensors, theyd not rely on local PD to provide human security -- theyd instead have doe (or whomever) protection/security services officers posted.

Anyways, its a nice tale but im afraid it doesnt jive too well with how these things really work.

I'm kind of thinking absolute worst case scenario is that they were doing some sort of nuclear or radiological research and there was an accident, and someone wants to keep it hush hush. I'm still miffed they took my memory card.

Well, radiation has some utility in pharmaceuticals -- particularly in manufacture where it is sometimes used to sterilize. i think it also has some application in pharmaceutical research.

There have been a few cases over the years of hospitals, manufacturers and so forth, getting in trouble for retiring equipment with radioactive materials without properly disposing of said materials. I remember one case in particular of lethal radiation poisoning that resulted from improper disposal.

Interesting. Perhaps the last tenants of the building did not properly dispose of radioactive materials, and the city/PD/whoever is still in the works of getting the EPA involved?

Obviously. I would have asked the cop out right, "This is the Texas Door isn't it?"

in most hospitals, and I am sure in this pharmaceutical research building they have a thing called a cyclotron (sic). It is used in the manufacturing of Nuclear Medicine, a branch of my line of work. They usually use it to create drugs that have radioactive elements in them like iodine isotopes, gadolinium, and such that decay very quickly and cannot be shipped.

As far as these things emitting so much radiation to close a building, I doubt it. They inject it into patients, so the dose cannot be lethal.

Here is my two cents. Pharmaceutical company goes under, can't afford to keep the place, employees come to work the next day and are told the place is closed, and they will be moved to a diff location. The place is watched by security cams and cops because there is still potential for drugs to be in the building, and don't want junkies screwing around with nuclear medicines, and narcotics.

Your story is more fun though!

I don't know what is, or has, happened in the building. But one thing I am sure of is that based on what you say, they had no legal right to take your card without your consent to do so. They had no real probable cause, they did not arrest you, it really isn't any kind of evidence, so in my humble opinion, with past experience where I should know, I don't believe they legally could have kept your memory card.

Now, if it was empty, or had nothing on it you want, your probably time and money ahead to just forget it and go buy a replacement. But, if you want to retrieve it, I believe you should be able to do so. And possibly file a complaint about them taking your card.

I run into this from time to time as a railfan. Taking photos of railroads and infrastructure since 9/11, occasionally produces a boner with a cop or security "agent" who doesn't have the training or the brains to know that it is completely illegal to take a memory card, camera, or any other personal property without a warrant or strong probable cause, usually enough to lead to an arrest.

I've gone long on this, but this is a sore spot with me. Now that said, there are some really strange actions by the cops. Again, based on what you said. Taking photos of your tattoos? Taking your memory card? That's not standard police actions for just stopping someone who has been looking through the windows of a building.

I'm not sure how many of you have met Buttram, but he is a big, intimidating fellow. Might have something to do with it. He's as nice and sweet as could be, but definitely someone to have on your side. I could see the cops seeing him as a potential threat, although they would be dead wrong.

Coming to Dallas soon BTW Captain, I'll give you a shout when I get there. Maybe we can score some radioactive pills and get all spiderman on some shit.

If you want you could hook up with Bacon and I and see if we work something out. We've got 4 wheelers and such.

Yeah, just let me know and we'll figure out a time to get together and do something. Maybe we'll go a little further west and try to open the Texas Door.
