Cabin up on Yonder Mountain, plus Mystery Vehicle

I discovered this place quite by accident while out for a country drive with my kids. The first time I drove past it, I didn't even see it. We turned around and headed back, and my son had to pee, so I pulled over right in front of it and still didn't see it till I was out of the car, then it suddenly appeared out of the woods in front of me. I didn't have my camera with me at the time, so I Google Mapped the way back there when I got home and came back ASAP.

I was looking forward to the picturesque drive up here, but it was raining.

Leaving the pavement and heading uphill

Climbing still higher

I had the bad luck of having the family who lives at the very end of this road driving home behind me as I headed to the location. So I kept going past it, turned around at the dead end, and waved casually like I was just out for a scenic drive as I passed them unloading their shopping bags from the car. I drove as slowly as I could once I rounded the bend so it wouldn't be terribly obvious when the sound of the gravel crunching stopped, and pulled over, being very careful not to slam my door as I got out.

The dogs around the bend were barking like crazy. I whispered "shut up, shut up, SHUT UP" as I walked quickly towards the house, feeling like a great big buffoon as I crashed loudly through the undergrowth.

The dogs didn't shut up. They kept barking and I began to feel panicked. I moved quickly through the house, trying to capture as much of it as I could before anyone came to see what I was up to.

The rooms were TINY.

And very dark. I had to do a 2-second exposure in this photo.

Another long exposure here. This room was pitch black. See how low the ceiling is? I am 5'4" and if I stood on my tiptoes I could rub my head on the ceiling.

Screened in back porch.

A coal stove. There was an extensive woodpile out back, and a large pile of coal also.

The whole back half of the house tilted to the left and had significant water damage to the floor. When I set up this shot, I originally sat in the opposite chair, and it sank under me.

Outside of the porch. Right about this time, the dogs finally stopped barking. I breathed a sigh of relief. I was nervous about this location, but I don't think it's on anyone's property after all, and if it is, they don't seem to care very much.

Climbing up the very steep hill behind the house. I was trying to find the stairs to go to the second floor. I couldn't find them anywhere inside, so thought maybe there was an exterior stairwell.

I began to feel a little weirded out by my inability to find the stairs. Had they been walled up for some reason? Then, finally, I found them, hidden behind the open front door. Look at how narrow these suckers are. I couldn't even go up them forwards, I had to turn my feet to the sides. This and the low ceilings made me wonder if dwarves lived here.

No, I don't know what that thing is, but thanks for asking.

Bad chair! Bad! Go stand in the closet!

The wildlife had really done a number on this place. Everything was shredded and shat upon. Rodent and bird nests were everywhere.

I rescued this Richard Alpert cup from another abandonment that was collapsing. I like to take pictures of myself with it in other places I explore. Circle of life.

Looks like someone found some rose quartz and set it here.

This metal shed stood to the right of the house. As I walked up to it, a pair of grouse strutted boldly right up to me, puffed out their feathers, gave me the eye, and then strutted away. I tried to get a picture of them but they blended in too well.

The logos on the canning jars inside the shed were in use 1930-1960. I doubt it has been abandoned quite that long, though.

Old stepping stones and gateposts.

This shed stood across the road from the house, against the river.

I was hoping to find some kind of springhouse in here, since there was no plumbing in the house whatsoever (yet there was electricity and a TV antenna, seemed odd), but I couldn't get the door open.

A collapsed log barn.

Yep, pretty flat.

I walked back up to the house to take one final exterior shot, and happened to take a closer look at the bag of trash I'd previously ignored. Someone had cleaned and painted in here, presumably not too long ago. Maybe it had been put up for sale and no one had bought it.

I turned around and headed back to my van, and caught a glimpse of this down in the dry riverbed.

WE CAN'T STOP HERE, THIS IS BAT COUNTRY

As I headed back down, the sun finally came out.

When I said it was on top of a mountain, I wasn't kidding.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?

If anyone has any ideas of how to date this place or the vehicle, I'd be super appreciative. I can usually find clues that tell me when houses were built and when they were abandoned, but I was a little disappointed to find nothing obvious enough here. I hoped the canning jars would help, but the logo was in use for such a range of years, and they could possibly predate the house anyway.

My guess on the car, it's the back half of a '53-'54 Ford. Final answer.

Looks like a really cool explore, thanks.

Nice find!
This is why I like the mountains.

Unlike urban areas, there's not a bunch of ignorant kids to run around spray painting and breaking windows.

If I were you I might have stopped and asked the folks you passed about the house. You can usually get some background information about a place and a blessing to be there if you're polite and straightforward.
I don't do that in the city, but that's because folks in the city usually haven't been around long enough to know the history of anything around them, and are suspicious of seemingly everyone.
Of course I may just be biased since I relate more to folks from the mountains and rural areas.

Yeah, I think this is the first abandonment I've ever been in that actually had intact windows.

I did consider asking the folks at the end of the road if they had any info to share, but I'm painfully shy, and paranoid of crazy posessive rednecks with guns. Silly, I know. I tried once to dig up history on a place and was very rudely cockblocked, and it's scarred me ever since.

And that chopped up, it may have been a beater for the kids to ride on the trail.
