This one is not abandoned, but very nice state run park. Grab the ferry, have a picnic, walk around the old fort/prison. I took off from work for a few hours and took the ferry. Fort Delaware was developed to protect the ports of Wilmington, DE and Philadelphia, PA. It is accessed only by the ferry and is a state run park. It became a prison for confederate soldiers and Southern loyalists during the Civil War, many were from the Battle of Gettysburg. It housed between 11,000 and 13,000 prisoners at its peak. Somewhere around 3,000 people died through the Fort's lifetime, many during the aftermath of the Civil War.

When did you go? I was just there.

Closer than you think~ When you dig up the past, you tend to get dirty.

That's probably the coolest active urbex I've seen...I went to one of these types of deals once. It was very small and there was so little to see that I actually just used it for high ground to view an actual abandonment off in the distance!

Fort Delaware is pretty awesome. They have living history too if you are into that. A blacksmith that actually makes you things. Lots of cannons! Oh and another short Ferry ride and you are at Fort Mott. But I haven't been there yet.

Nice work man. Make sure you get a ferry schedule first so you don't end up with 1 hour to explore. And sometimes the bathrooms are locked before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Don't ask me how I know this. You can get up onto the top of Fort Delaware if your feeling feisty. Not a whole lot up there, but the view is ok. I just wish you could camp out there with the fort open.

Exploring the distance between points A & B.
