I started searching around on Bing maps and you can really see how large this yard used to be, but what really caught my eye on the aerial imagery was what looked like an old roundhouse currently being used by a business just east of the yard. It looked like the turntable was intact too! The roundhouse looks like it had some work done, maybe new siding or something, it didn't look like a classic roundhouse, but the shape and the turntable leave little doubt as to its previous life.
Any idea what railroad used to operate this yard back in the day?

Yeah, actually the turntable is still intact and an old diesel shop is still there as well (just to the NW of the roundhouse). I believe currently 3 businesses occupy the roundhouse, which is still taken good care of. New York Central was the company running the rail-yard I believe since the old diesel shop was owned by them.

Specifically it was NYC's longtime subsidiary Michigan Central. Yes, the same Michigan Central of Detroit's MC Station fame.
Amtrak now owns the mainline through Niles. Looks like you caught their work train tied up there in the yard.

Yeah, its still around, I spoke with the owners and they said they would give us a tour in a couple weeks! so look for pictures soon!

Yeah there was at least 3 cars full of the wooden ties as well.

Amtrak owns the line between Chesterton Indiana and Kalamazoo; Niles was the only town in that territory that had much of a yard so it makes sense that they'd keep their work equipment tied up there.
