| | | Teton Dam < on 8/7/2011 6:47 AM >
| | | In 1976, a dam was built on the Teton River in SE Idaho (where I live and grew up) called the Teton Dam. Within months of its reservoir being filled and construction being completed, the dam failed basically wiping out the town of Rexburg, Idaho, where I grew up, and flooding the cities of Idaho Falls and Blackfoot while causing immense damage to everything in between. The flood even claimed the lives of 11 people. The cause of the failure ended up being attributed to what can be summarized as neglectful engineering. The dam has not been rebuilt and its eerie remains still exist. I have always been fascinated with this story and with the site where the remains of the dam have been left. I visited this site for the first time when I was only 7. I guess you could say that was my first urban exploring experience. I recently spent a fair amount of time at the site photographing it for the intent of putting together an online album offering a tour of the site. I had wanted to add these photos to the UE DB on this site, but do not yet have sufficient privileges. So I thought I'd come here and post a link to the Picasa album where I've posted these photos. Feel free to view the photos, and post your thoughts about them. I consider myself to be the most knowledgeable person on the Teton Dam, especially on the site. If anyone has question about this, feel free to email me at [email protected] I'd also love to show fellow explorers who might be passing through the area the site. Enjoy. Here's the link to the album: https://picasaweb....lou.tyler/TetonDam

| | | Very nice. Desolate industrial infrastructure is always lovely, especially at dusk.

| | | That's a fascinating location. There's something awe-inspiring about the remains of such huge-scale infrastructure, post-failure.

| | | Pretty cool. I have to agree, I love LARGE abandoned projects. You can wander for hours at a time, doesn't matter if it is a office building, hotel, manufacturing or industrial they all have cool stories to tell.

| | | Thanks so much for the complaints, guys! This site is definitely amazing, especially in an area that lacks a lot of exploration options. I've frequented this site for years now and still discover something new everytime I visit it. what do you expect though? This dam was massive for an earthen dam as it was over 300' tall!

I meant compliments instead of complaints haha. The day I took all these photos was a fun one, spent hiking all over the side.

The site is actually just a mile off highway 33 and accessible by a maintained road. And the site is free and open to explorers. The BR has sealed off anything they deem dangerous and left the rest as free game which is one thing cool about this site. So you can explore with no worries of getting caught nor in trouble. And again, I'm always happy to meet up with anyone visiting the area and guide them around the site. [last edit 8/19/2011 9:02 PM by organboi - edited 1 times]
