Pawnee Indian Agency, OK

The Pawnee Agency was established in what is present day Pawnee county in 1874, when the Pawnee tribe was relocated from their ancestral lands in Nebraska to Oklahoma. In addition to the Indian agency, a boarding school was opened in 1877, and a post office established.

The Pawnee Industrial Boarding School could accommodate no more than one-fourth of the tribe's school-age population, so in 1879, when the government, began establishing off-reservation boarding schools, many Pawnees attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania and Hampton Institute in Virginia. When Chilocco and Haskell schools opened in Oklahoma, Pawnee children were sent there as well..

In 1937 Pawnee leaders began a three-decade-long effort to regain the Pawnee Reserve lands surrounding the agency. In 1962 the tribe acquired the former Pawnee Indian School, and by 1968 that land surrounding the agency was returned to the tribe.

The school consisted of a complex of stone buildings that had been vacant for twenty years when they were returned to the tribe. While many of these building have been restored and used as tribal government and healthcare facilities, for some reason, some where just left. This includes one of the boarding school buildings and an agency administrators home.

This was one of the boarding schools. Sitting basically in the middle of the complex, it seems to be left to it's own devices. I plan to go back to see if I can some inside shots of the building.

Some of the old playground equipment still stands.

Abandoned teachers residence nearby.

In the history of the Pawnee tribes, these facilities were definitely not looked upon with fond memories. These were essentially setup to convert the Indians, repressing their culture, language, and customs. While not concentration camps, they were strict, bordering on harsh, and at best indifferent to their charges. Children were separated from their families for extended periods and forbidden to speak their native language.
This was the residence of the agency administrator. In addition to neglect, it appears to have suffered some fire damage.

The honey bees found a use for the building.

There are several more abandoned/neglected structures on the facility. I plan on going back in the fall when I have more time to explore.

Ruins, the fate of all cities.

Wow! I've seen the one in Carlisle. I heard that Sitting Bull spent time there. These places seem etched with a tangible sense of sadness and loss. Once fierce, proud nations reduced to mere shadows of their former selves. Dominated, subjugated, promised the American Dream then forced into lives of poverty and despair.

Still, it's a nice set. I'm glad some of these places still exist to help us remember this questionable chapter of American history.

Very nice set. There are a lot of those neglected parts of history in this section of the country. Got a few right around me. Though not with many structures still remaining.
