Visiting Chicago - need fellow photogs/explorers for caperin' (safety in #'s)

Hi there. I haven't posted a lot to this site, but have been an active reader of it for a few years now. I live in SF, but am visiting Chicago next week for (4) days.

I've done a decent amount of exploring here in the Bay Area (you can peruse some sets on Flickr here: http://goo.gl/ti2i2 -- dont worry, it really goes to Flickr), but I've not done any UER/photog stuff in Chicago at all.

One of my main rules is always going with others; that whole safety in numbers thing works pretty well.

That said, I have about 2 - 2.5 days I leave on an early Saturday afternoon.

I'd be really grateful to find some fellow photographers/explorers who wouldn't mind playing host for a little bit. I have access to zipcar, i have gas $, can spring $ for dust masks if we need any, water, etc. I just want to get some good shots and see what Chicago has to offer. I hear Gary,IN has a few nice things too

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Won't be able to join you, but definitely check out Gary, IN. I've done the Post Office, Palace, Auditorium, and Church alone with no trouble.... can't get shot at if there's nobody around to pull the trigger (no joke). Stop at Dixie Square, too, since it's on the way there.

what this man said, hit up gary if you have the chance. you can take the south shore line there if you don't have a car in chicago from the millenium metra station. i went solo my first time, and though i did feel like i stuck out, i didn't feel overly threatened. maybe keep a leg of your tripod unlocked while you're walking around in case you need to smack a crackhead.

i personally really like city methodist.

I'll also be visiting Chicago next week. Any other tips for those headed to Gary, IN for a day via the train other than being alert?

City Methodist suffered some collapse recently, otherwise it's pretty straightforward.

shit! that's not a small collapse. i was worried for a second there though, i was hoping it wasn't the sanctuary itself...though i feel like if anything, that roof might be in the best shape out of the whole building.
