ive always wanted to see the place in mt pleasant. ive already seen just about everything there is to see in s.e. mi, so central sounds cool to me.
traverse city asylum is cool as hell, ive been 3 times and had no problems with cops. we just walked around shooting pix of the outside till we found a way in, then went in one at a time when no one was looking.
dont count on me though john, my back has been fucked up since march 2010. i have good days and bad

Ah....I'm sorry to say, I have only driven a manual once in my life, over 20 years ago, and it didn't go well! 
Tell you what: PM me when your back is stable and we can check out some sights around our own area on a weekend or evening. That way, you wouldn't have to drive as far and we could take my van for short distances. Sound cool ?

sure! but since i cant really run or climb, i mostly stick to easy shit like the packard these days. i CAN drive, but after a few hours, it fucks up my back.
an old friend of mine wants to see the packard really bad, ill let you know when we're going (probably on a sunday...soon)

| | | | Probably won't be able to do the meet. I will be in Mt. Pleasant the weekend of the 6th, and since it's a six hour trip, making two in a month doesn't sound appealing. All of my family lives up there, and making the trip but not spending time with them kinda goes over like lead balloons.
If you go to the state hospital, there's a park down Bamber road (northeast of the hospital) that's good to park at. There's also a cop or two that patrols the grounds irregularly. The area is largely residential, and I have heard that the neighbors don't hesitate to call the cops.
Outside of that, try and hit up some of the steam tunnels under CMU. I would recommend going to either Flint or Lansing as well, lots to see in both cities.

Also, anything that comes up in the actual Detroit area would be cool, too. Been to Fisher Body, the chop shop, the old Globe building, the old Nike base in Newport, and, of course, multiple trips to Northville. Still have a list of Detroit places I've got to hit before it's all too late and they're gone, including the Highland Park police station and Packard.

I could always rent a car. It would be cool to have one or two other folks from the Metro-Detroit area to ride w/ and perhaps kick in a few bucks on gas. (As far as expenses, though, if you can't do it, don't worry about it. I'm not going to hand anyone a copy of a bill and say, "OK, $93.24 in gas, that means you owe me $32.09 and a quarter of a penny!"  )
Anyone who would be interested in riding out w/ me, just let me know via PM and we'll work it out from that point.

Any of you Detroit-ers ever stay at The Leland Hotel? We went to Detroit last weekend for Maker Faire (we all work as journalists/photogs) and stayed there. It might be operational, but taking the stairwell through the 20 floors (and basements) is pretty sweet. We also went to the Faygo HQ (we got press passes to go check out the Gathering of the Juggalos in S. Illinois so we thought why not check out Faygo) and almost everything around there is abandoned and smashed to pieces. Looks like people were trying to strip out all the metal. Houses you can just walk right into and a high school that's been demolished. Was thinking about posting photos, but we haven't been approved for full membership and not sure if we should post public photos.

Totally missed this! Was great to actually meet you guys in person, hoping you all can come this weekend....
You should post your Detroit pics, even if you don't have full membership yet... just start a new thread in the Great Lakes section but be very vague about the details that would give away the location (especially the Leland Hotel ones, those pics are badass!... I guess we already blew the load on the location on that though haha)
edit/second thought: maybe you could get some of the Gathering of the Juggalo pics up on here too.. I mean it's kind of urban exploring right?
