Thank you for your diligent research! A good experiment should be able to be duplicated - so I will give it a shot tonight and compare results.

| | | Just watched the video. If you think it is dig-able or cut-able or burnable? You got another thing coming. This stuff survives everything they throw at it. They even shot at it with a 50cal & it only penetrated 6 inches. Good luck, let us know when ya get it open. This actually shows them fill the first shaft & the entrance. It also appears the foam seals several large squares of concrete at the main entrance. Let you guys reassess your attack plan after you watch the video. This stuff is a UE'rs worst nightmare.

| | | that's what she said! thanks so much for diggin up that video clyde! that'll make our removal all the easier. here's a pic i took for you guys this morning, this is the last of what we collected that wasn't left out to dry.
i finally found a good instructional video on the removal process, it looks pretty easy just a matter of the right tools, chemicals & safety apparatus(power or hand drill, respirators, a liquid from xpandifoam® out of Ireland. which is good cause i was never gonna give this up, things are finally looking up!

| | | I am loving the enthusiasm! We did take some of it home, but I would be nervous testing out chemicals on it since I did horrible in all sciences and I am prone to burn myself. With my luck, we would cause an explosion. Since we kept it in a Tupperware it has stayed somewhat transparent and gooey, unlike the stuff exposed to oxygen. It even turned a light blue. i was gonna toss madcap's clothes out after this:
until i found this page on how to remove it from his clothing, gotta love instructables:

| | | While I was bored at work this morning I started looking into this stuff, figured if enough of us are working on it, then someone is bound to figure it out. I didn't find anything absolutely pertaining to this, but found a site talking about different foams and what they hold up to as well as a list of item which can dissolve the foams. It even rated them as far was what is most volatile. I couldn't make sense of some of the in depth talk that got to scientific for me, but maybe some of you can make sense of it. Here's a link to it, hope someone figures it out! http://toolmonger.com/2008/11/19/reader-tip-great-stuff-spray-foam/

Well i suppose I could say that, or Someone who knows where it is want to head out there with me and poke around at the stuff? I really dont see the difference, and I'm not asking for locations because I cant bother to look myself, I would like to be sure of it(or at the very least try) before driving 40 miles out there for nothing.

| | | Tvox, Your best bet is to post up something local to you. It doesn't have to be anything great, just go out explore, post up. people might tease a little if your shots are bad, or if you explore your grandmas garage. But that's how we'll get to know you. We'll see how you react to others on this site. And if you're not a total asshole..........You'll have pals here before you know it.

| | | The expanding foam stuff actually came from the National Nuclear Security Administration at Lawrence Livermore National Labs.
It's been used for years to offer protection to extremely high-security areas, the logic being that if a determined threat (or disaster such as big earthquake or plane crash) is somehow able to bypass the various electronic security systems & physical hardening of a safe/vault/room/nuclear weapons transport trailer, etc. as a last resort, the special foam will be released & rapidly expand to fill-up the area to try to protect the sensitive material from theft, damage or exposure to fire, water & as a side-benefit, probably also trap/kill any hostile parties that did make it inside the facility. The stored liquid foam has a shelf-life to it, so the NNSA's LLNL donated a large amount that was about to expire to NPS GGNRA for use in filling access areas to the bunker in-question. It's probably not smart to go digging around in that hardened foam stuff -- because this particular type is only in use by the US federal gov't & military for a select number of sensitive locations, & thus they received a waiver from undergoing the usual FDA & EPA tests for toxicity, etc. That's why you have the top layer of dirt.

| | | Posted by ZombieMeat Apparently the following can decompose the material in: This info is on their MSDS for the 2 materials you combine to create the material. Looks like CO or NO should dissolve the material. -ZM
|
You do realize, that "Hazardous decomposition products" is NOT THE SAME as "products which create decomposition of this material"???? What you quoted is what that material will give off, as byproducts, when you heat or burn it. Not what materials you can use to decompose it. This also leads me to believe that blasting it with dynamite might be a poor idea, especially within a confined space. Could fill the space with some very toxic byproducts that you would NOT want to breathe. Instead, if we induce an electric arc in a certain manner, it should not only vaporize any harmful byproducts, but it will also subminimalize the structure of this foam to a point where it can be manipulated once more, and possibly removed. **EDIT** Oh, and Tvox, UER is filled with haters. Don't pay any attention to them. You should have just as much opportunity to go to this site as anyone else does. Since I'm a nice guy, I'll post the coords for you. I think this place is a part of history, and should be available to all people. 37°41'54.82"N 123° 0'16.02"W Happy Exploring! [last edit 8/13/2011 6:16 AM by Therrin - edited 2 times]
