"We had a lot of people get in and it was just a matter of time before someone got hurt," said Alexandra Picavet, parks spokeswoman, explaining why the action was being taken.

so i gather that the authorities knew about it but turned their heads...until now. oh well, long live the memories.

You beat me to it. I just found this bunker last week. Glad I got a few shots before it gets closed up. There are a couple others identical to this bunker, I'm going to check them out to see if they have an access points like this one.

Follow up article:

Notice, the end of the article: they intend to cut down all of the trees in area. Whatever they used to cover the foxhole better be impossible to move, because its going to be out in the open very soon. Who has a shovel?

Man, what a bummer. From the sound of the article, no one ever actually did get hurt - the rep simply said "it was only a matter of time" until someone did.

Awesome way to spend gov't money...I bet that will cost a good $25,000 for the crew and equipment and supplies to seal that thing off.

Luckily, it will be a "city job" so hopefully it will be possible to circumvent. ;) You locals, keep an eye on the place and look for chinks in the armor!

The State is broke, but to be fair, the GGNRA gets a set budget and work within that. I was told by someone at the GGNRA that they have the largest number of volunteers helping them. If you were to add up all the Park Service volunteers that are in California, the GGNRA still has more. So I'm sure they were able to get some free labor to take care of this.

I read a comment on YouTube that was made 5 days ago. It states they dropped in two large pieces of concrete. A cheap fix. Here is the comment:

Dear Chris & anybody looking to venture in this amazing bunker. The government/rangers/somebody has attempted to seal off the entrance by placing two concrete blocks in the hole. Do not be discouraged if you think you cannot get in, all you have to do is lower yourself in but be careful.

This is why super secret places like this should never be

*outed on UER

Also, from what I understand, the explorers who have been going there recently have not been covering the hole well enough to keep it hidden. What really bothers me the most is that now I may not ever have the opportunity to check out such a wonderful place, b/c of the mistakes made by those before me (randoms, or UER members, who knows who cares!).

I also find it awkward that the very ppl who wrote these news articles and spoke so strongly of closing up the entrance way b/c it was "so dangerous", still took the time to climb down the "very dangerous" ladder, take pictures and check everything out and have just as much fun as the rest of us. Check out the recent welds on the south end door. They cut it open and walked in instead of climbing down the ladder. The park staff aren't going to risk getting stuck like Pooh Bear!
