new star!

In an attempt to get people to look at locations in the LDB and rate them, I introduce (as a test) the LDB RATER star:

Location DB Rater Star - Appears if this user has rated at least 50 locations in the Location DB. In order to rate a location, the user must view at LEAST half of the photos in the location.

By forcing people to view at least half of the photos before making a rating, it will hopefully get them to actually look and make a real decision, instead of just clicking through and doing the rating just to get the star.

So far, one person has the star -- Sniper.

Just a thought, does it matter when we looked at the pictures? Could I rate places in which I have previously seen all the pictures or do I have to veiw them all again?

Is there a way to know how many locations I have rated so far?

Nooooooooooo! Not again!! Ahem: Each location has to be rated by 5 people for an overall 7 rating. Which in turns grants you the spooky magical DB star

I think the "rater star" is a bit of a lame idea. Browsing some picture galleries and clicking on a few rating buttons does not necessarily constitute a useful contribution to the site. Pretty much anybody with an internet connection and too much time on their hands can earn this one in a snap.

Also, I don't think the photo galleries should have any bearing on the rating of a particular location. The info about the site on the main page is what's of actual value. The picture galleries are just eye candy. Beautiful and artistic motivation inducing eye candy in some cases, but eye candy nonetheless.

I wish more people would bother to rate the DB entries, but the current implementation ain't the way to go IMHO.

Sorry for not offering any alternative ideas at this time.

The star is there to give people a reason to rate locations... it seems to be working.

If you don't care for it, just ignore it.

How can you find out how many locations you have rated?

Because I'm sure I've rated over fifty, but wouldn't mind knowing for sure.

You did rate over 50, see that "check" star? It probobly didn't show up before because the stars only update once a day.

You know when I was in 1st grade, I didn't see why all the other kids were getting so motivated by stickers and stars, and I thought they would grow out of it...

The second paragraph makes you sound like a patronising prick.

Question for Av:

The third rating of a UEDB location "content quality" - what does this refer to about the location? The whole entry in the DB, including the description for example or is it just to rate stories and pictures?

And, if it is for stories and pictures, then that's a bit redundant to the photography rating... like how would i rate the "content quality" of a site with nice photographs, but crumby stories of their explorations?

I think the content quality is more for the written part of the entry-historical details, descriptions, stuff like that. I think it could also be used for stories now that we have such a thing.

you know I go back periodically to add more info. Especially since I post pics then work with it. If there a way to repost a new score?
