| | | | Taking into consideration that Mike has said that he occasionally forces entry into locations and I beleive he said he said he's ok with taking stuff from sites on occasion (not 100% sure on that part), this didn't really suprise me. It seems he stole stuff, and he sold it for a quick profit on ebay. It also seems that he took them not because he cared about the artifacts being preserved or documented, but just because he thought he could get some cash for them.
The difference with the situation with the florida door, and the wraiths and the oil refinery, and other explorers who have "broken the law" is that they have left the sites the way they were found. The florida door in particular hasn't happened yet, and if it does, it will be resealed and left the way it was found. We aren't smashing a window, or kicking down a door and leaving permanent damage to the site. We would be undoing a couple of small welds and then rewelding them back (probably even stronger than the original welds which are now rusted). We all break the law to some degree, but most explorers also follow the idea of not changing the places they visit, and mike did not do this.
As far as this being grounds for banning, I don't know. He didn't violate any forum rules in particular as he didn't even talk about this here, but at the same time I would certainly nto want to be lumped into a group with a person that steals things from abandoned buildings for their own profit.

its well known that mike isn't that loved around here since he talks shit about the admins yet still uses the forum to plug his site. banning him is one thing as this is a moderated forum and the mods can do as they please, seriously fucking with his life outside of the internet is another.
i'll let you all in on a little secret, my father is an antique dealer and a pretty well respected one at that. he has a fascination with my photos mainly to see whats left behind, because its a known fact that antique dealers are usually the ones who raid abandoned places. my father isn't one of them as he deals in the fine arts, but he knows that historic memorabilia found all over the place is often stolen.
what do you say we all get a search warrant for every antique dealer within 50 miles of danvers? i'm joking.
i question what is next in the urbex witchhunt.

Alright, I have no problem with anyone being banned from a board - it's Av's decision to make, and it can be taken back. No trial needed, because it doesn't screw up someone's life, and because it can be taken back or amended as the situation unfolds.
That is the kind of stuff you can apoligize for.
On the other hand, for those who took part in reporting him to the police - this is far more upsetting to me than Mike Digital's supposed theft and sale of artifacts. obviously, if true, he sucks - but i don't know him, i don't know Av, and i certainly wouldn't take any kind of action, particularly calling the police and having him charged with a felony, based on a report on someone i don't know, from someone i don't know, webmaster or no (no offense intended).
This is the second ethics-related issue i have seen BPM weigh in on in as many weeks - in the first, he made a strongly worded warning to that moron NVKaos, and to anyone else who didn't fit his ethics - involving his past as a police officer, his friends on the force, and his license to carry arms (http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread.asp?fid=1&threadid=9083&currpage=5). In the second (today's mess) he seems to have contacted the police on the basis of forum information - possibly leading to serious consequences for MD. especially odd, considering BPM is one of the many of the people on this board willing to take stuff from sites about to be demolished.
this seems like a violation of the rules of this forum, not to mention the fact that it makes me very leery of being involved here. like others have said, we all break the law - i may be an "ethical" UEr by my standards, but am I risking judgement by others, who may have little or no information before they take action? i think the White Rabbit situation has made it perfectly clear that even those of us who hold to the "take only pictures" ethic are far from immune to legal troubles.
i know i am new here, and i may not have all of the info or the respect needed to be heard, so if anything i said was wrong, i apoligize in advance. no disrespect intended, but i would like to see an explanation from the parties involved.

If this is true (I doubt it, but if), that has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever heard.
While I don't condone taking items from abandoned locations for profit, selling items that really aren't from an abandoned location but saying they are is hilarious. It's always funny when chumps get taken.
Mike, I sincerely hope this is the case.
