Rural UE Road Trip through VA, WV and KY

After all of the bullshit I've been through with big cities and the crime and the cops I've been so much more paranoid about UE than I used to be, but I'm trying to ease back into it. I decided this summer, instead of doing my usual big UE road trip around major east coast cities that I've done the last two years, I'm going to do a rural UE road trip. I want to explore rural southwest VA, WV and eastern KY. I know that there are a lot of coal related abandonments in this area.

I've found quite a few great resources for finding these abandonments and think I have a ton of leads for locations that I think will be really awesome to stop by as I travel. I'm planning to stay with CouchSurfers, like I normally do, and I've made a pledge with myself to not travel by interstate at all through the whole trip, and to completely avoid even passing through big cities.

So I'm looking for people in rural southwest VA, anywhere in WV, or eastern KY who are interested in meeting up to explore! Right now I'm doing this road trip alone, but I don't explore alone so I need to find some people. If anyone wants to travel with me on this trip, I'm totally open to that! Or if people just want to meet me in a specific town or at a certain location, that's cool too. Or if anyone can offer me a couch to crash on, that's really awesome!

The date range I'm looking at right now for this trip is August 8th through 26th, although that might change.

That sounds pretty sick! Ever notice how hard it is to find someone that likes to drive that much just to go see places that aren't touristy? I find it odd that more people aren't down for doing that...

Anyways, I'll be moving to Hickory, NC in August. I don't have much in the way of sites to contribute, but I pack a mean ipod playlist, like driving more than most, and I'm pretty chill. ...aaand (pretty important) I'm not obnoxious or a douchenozzle lol.

Definatly check out Benham and Lynch in Hazard County, Kentucky. They are two old coal towns that were completely built by coal companies in the late 1800's (i believe) and then subsequently abandoned. I explored there earlier this year and it is fantastic, I highly recommend it, also the people there are very nice and will drop everything to tell you their story and the coal town story.

We're sorta like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open.
