Old Pine Crest Cabins Motor Court (used in Road to Perdition) Saugatuck, MI

As is common, two of us were on our way to conduct an interview with someone in Douglas, MI for the publication we work for. As is also common, we decided there had to be at least one weird thing we could find. On our last trip out that way, all we come across was a giant sign that read "the wages of sin are death" and a few locals telling us (again) about Singapore, the city lost in sand.

Using the usual keywords, we happened across a Flickr site telling of the Old Pine Crest Cabins Motor Court, an abandoned motel located on the Blue Star Highway, supposedly used for a shot in Road to Perdition. The Flickr gave us only one photo of the place and absolutely no clue as to where along the highway it could be. We cruised down the highway for a while, running once into the NEW Pine Crest. It wasn't a worthless trip because we saw a lot of strange bars and signs all the way to Ganges, but it wasn't the old Motor Court we were hoping for. Finally, we used our phones to expand the picture of the motor court. Barely visible in the background was a giant blue star -- of course, the sign for the gym, clearly visible as you get off the highway.

We cruised back down and saw a dirt parking lot with a building standing in a bunch of trees. We parked, jumped out and recognized the motel from the one photo. It is definitely abandoned and totally dilapidated, however someone must own it as one of the doors has been well pad-locked. The rest of the rooms are simply open, with rotting mattresses, fire extinguishers and various other objects strewn inside. At the end of the row of rooms is an open window, leading into a grimy kitchen. A box of Easy Mac from 2001 sits on the ledge. It's easy to crawl inside. The refrigerator reveals rotting foot and the sink is full of unwashed dishes. There is an unmade bed, clothes hanging in the closet and the couch is littered with papers, books and photographs of a man and his family. A quick glance around will reveal his name, but a Google search brought up absolutely nothing on him.

The ceiling is caving in and the back of the court has been overgrown with trees. I'd recommend a dayside exploration as its clearly visible, but you look much suspicious routing through during the day. We visited close to the film festival so figured we'd just pose as film buffs curious about the location if anyone asked us what we were doing. We were, however, left entirely alone.

I've looked at a few of the explorations you and your dog have gone on and it seems like we probably live relatively close to one another. Were you under the train bridge in that one set? I filmed a movie down there once.

I went to look for a location and look what came up. Looks like we are both a little late:

The old Pine Crest Cabins Motor Court—in its heyday a motel with garage, kitchen, beds and more in each unit, but abandoned long ago to rot—are coming down at behest of landowner Linus Starring.

Interesting... This very thread might have something to do with the owner's decision to finally tear it down. He isn't doing it because it's an eyesore or because he wants to redevelop the land for something else:

“They’ve become a hazard and liability,” said Starring, who also owns Saugatuck Dune Rides southwest of the crumbling cabins.

So this week, Linus Starring announces the cabins are a liability. He wants to tear them down because he doesn't want to be held liable if somebody gets hurt if a ceiling or wall collapses on somebody (like an explorer) poking around in the ruins.

They know people are going into the cabins:

Curiosity seekers as late as last month found most rooms open, with rotting mattresses, fire extinguishers and more objects strewn inside.

They mention that curiosity seekers LAST MONTH were poking around in the rooms. This thread originated at that time. I think either the owner found this thread himself or somebody else alerted the owner. I don't know, obviously, but the timing is pretty close.

Whatever the case, it's sad to see something like this go. Too bad it was never fixed long ago, but I guess after a fire it's difficult to amass resources to rebuild. Plus, maybe there isn't much demand in that specific area.

Actually I did make it there before they tore it down, barely though... I hope it doesn't have anything to do with us with it being torn down though

Here are the pics I took:

The reporter clearly found this thread... they couldn't even think of their own words to use when describing the place.

Oh wow you're right, I didn't even notice that....

from the article:
Curiosity seekers as late as last month found most rooms open, with rotting mattresses, fire extinguishers and more objects strewn inside.

Ceilings were collapsed and the buildings’ backs overgrown with trees. Refrigerators held rotting food and sinks dirty dishes. Clothes hung in closets, while books and papers of long-ago occupants moldered on floors and couches.

Huh. I didn't notice that either. Guess they DID see this thread. We should tell the reporter they're plagerizing!

Oh well. It's sad to see something like this happen, but on the other hand at least a lot of people on here were able to see it in pictures before getting torn down.
