Old WPA school in Old Prue, OK

This is an old WPA school standing in the remnants of Old Prue on lake Keystone. Built in 1939-40, it was constructed of the usual rusticated sandstone, but definitely something extra went into its construction.

The masonry work is exceptional, especially for a WPA school. The rounded corners on the class room section and the pilasters on the main entrance are a nice touch. The continuous window sills, freizes, and the relief of a male and female student add to the buildings style. Supposedly it took 35,000 man hours to construct.

The building is fairly large, measuring about 230 by 60 feet. It's probably the only non residential structure still remaining of old Prue. With the construction of Lake Keystone in the 1950s, 90 percent of Prue was covered by the lake by 1964. The town was moved and renamed New Prue, and the old school now sits close to the shoreline.

The building is in a deteriorating state, with the roof leaking badly in many areas and appears to be used primarily as a large storage area. There was a caretaker living in one of the old class rooms that was kind enough to allow me inside for some pictures and share some history. The previous school had been located on the same property, and included a house, both of which are long gone, with only sidewalks marking where they once stood.

These recessed spaces were for lockers.

Someone had removed the tongue and groove flooring. This was just the subfloor.

The old caretaker had turned this classroom into his "gameroom".

The old gymnasium. It would have originally had a wooden floor over the concrete. It to had been removed.

The locker rooms were under the bleachers.

A shot of the school from the mid 80s. Not much had changed, except the roof was worse and possibly more vehicles had come here to die.

The previous Prue School and some bits of sidewalk. The caretaker said he thought it had burned, but wasn't sure.

Architectually, this is one of my favorite WPA schools, though the one in Chandler is similar. Prue had been hit hard by the depression and oil field bust, so this would have put some much needed money into the local economy. There are worse things than spending your final days staring out at Lake Keystone.

Ruins, the fate of all cities.
