Sorry to sound like such a dick, but unless you have a fairly good amount of time and experience in this hobby, I tend to categorize the speaker as a person who has no experience and is an attention whore. Sorry, present facts and me being a dickhead goes away.

I waited every night for a week at the Beet Scales, no one showed? Curious...

I think you need to grow up a bit and live on your own instead of your parent's house. Any time an article like the one printed is run in the mainstream, it hurts all of us. Bad research is death, period. Bad articles are death, period. Until you live in the world of UE a little bit more and truly understand that for most this is a lifestyle and some a hobby, you will never be accepted. Inane comments that you think make you look popular actually make people like me think you are an immature child.

Whoa dude. I know the Internet is serious business and all, but chill.
Bad research and articles are death, but not to the UE community. The reporter will get shit canned if anybody looks into it, but the UE community will go on. Honestly, on a large scale, nobody really cares about urban explorers. There may be some cops in a few cities and security guards at certain locations, but not that many people are aware or care about urban exploration. A negative article about this hobby is not going to hurt us in the long run. I've been "living in the UE world" for over 4 years now and it hasn't so far.

Until you live in the world of UER a little bit more, you may not notice that this is a recurring event(like finding a member's genitalia on 4chan). This isn't the first time that somebody gave an interview, the reporter put us in a bad light, and the community gave them shit for it. It has happened before, it will definitely happen again.

THIS GUY GOT IT!!! No, publishing to CNN/NY times is probably not the best idea, people in power actually read/care about it then. But this was a newspaper nobody gave a rat's ass about, and so no harm no foul.

The problem with these little no-name newspapers is that they're online, they get archived, and in general they last longer and reach a larger audience then the 4 locals who would normally read them. So when someone else goes to search for "Urban Explorers" online, articles like this one pop up. Maybe it's another reporter looking for sources, maybe it's a cop or property owner trying to figure out why their building keeps showing up on Flickr. Either way, articles like this give us a bad reputation long after the original 2-bit paper has gone bankrupt.

I tried signing up to comment but their 2-bit server failed to send me a confirmation email

I may be a huge douche for doing this, but I emailed this to the author and CC'd her editor. The one-time journalism student in me just couldn't hold back

Hi Anne, I'm "Freak", one of the people you mentioned in your June 1st article, "Meet Up, Break In". While I wasn't too happy with the title or the portrayal of my hobby, I also noticed quite a few glaring factual errors. For one thing, you've misidentified me as part of the Action Squad group, which I'm not (neither is "Krazy"). You also mis-identified Ninjalicious as a member of LUX (Ninj was an explorer from Canada who ran a zine and website, he passed away several years ago). And in fact, that's not his quote at all, it's from part of LUX's website that just happens to have a link to one of Ninj's web pages, but it wasn't written by him.

Did you do any actual research for this article? Do you know how to cite, verify, or even find sources? It really doesn't look like it. The average reader might not notice, but you've generated quite a buzz in the urban exploring community with your sloppy journalism. I'm not sure if it's typical of your paper or your personal style, but the article spent an awful lot of time on rambling exposition and really didn't come to a point. Even though it's about my hobby, it failed to capture my interest. Sorry to say it, but between the style and the factual errors, I've seen more professional material from high school journalism classes. A lot of us (urban explorers) are quite disappointed, both in the light this portrays us in, and the poor manner in which it was written. Your article has helped feed a movement among us to ignore or intentionally mislead journalists in future media dealings.

I'd never heard of your paper since I'm not from Louisville, but for the sake of your other readers, I hope the quality of journalism improves.

I've always been surprised by how many people actually are aware of the hobby. Get any bunch of people together and I'll bet you someone in the group has heard of people who do what we do. I get told fairly often by friends who were at some party and somebody started talking about "these guys that go in abandoned places". My friends always find it funny when someone starts telling them about this group, when they know me.

Lots of people know of the hobby, but don't necessarily know the extent of it, and a lot of times their whole concept of what we do comes from some article they read. No matter how small the chance of it impacting me, I'd rather hedge my bets and have them have learned that we're ethical and non destructive, as opposed to destructive thieves.

And with all due respect, 4 years in the UE world isn't much. 4 years ago was actually after a lot of old school explorers dropped their participation level in the online community because of how events were shaping up... Some of the people gone from this community is indeed a great loss which hurts the hobby.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

Wow, these things are still going on?

Little UE groups, bickering, giving tours to reporters? why?
How old are these people in the article anyways?

Hydrotherapy surveyed the thread with quiet arrogance; she had seen this all before. A low rumble in the distance of disquieted explorers who had an aversion to media swelled as some who were known as "noobs" made their voices heard.

It was always a tricky line to walk, she knew. That fine balance between free speech and voicing of dissenting opinions and the pending all out "shit show" as it was known on the internet. Memes filtered their way into the conversations like lonely gusts of wind through a long forgotten state school.

Her fingers hesitate over the "lock" button. Would it be fair to those who hadn't yet had a chance to change their font color and use bold or italic code to really get across the point that they were mad? Her brow furrows, pondering the potential of where "this thread is headed."

She brushes a stray hair from her face, grinning wryly as she finds the right words. She's spent enough time on the internet, researching for hours to know how this goes. She's a professional, only the most seasoned of explorers become moderators.

"Keep it civil, you motherfuckers, or I'm locking this the hell down."

Content, she presses "post reply", the gentle click reminding her of explorer's steps, echoing down desolate asylum corridors.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.

My favorite part of the article? Where "panda" uses a police scanner during the commission of a crime. Im pretty sure in most place, thats "srs bzns."

“It’s pretty old,” Panda counters as she whips out an iPhone for its emergency scanner app. It lets them listen in on police radio traffic, ears perked for reports of trespassers. Panda’s dad is a retired cop."

Lets all just go shit on some scale models and forget this whole thing happened ok? Seriously, much worse has happened, I wouldn't worry too much.
