Breaking in is indeed unfortunate, but the criticism here is semantics. Not going to start that war though, just saying this llama is uncalled for.

Well, obviously Panda and Dante are no longer part of my team. Hopefully they'll understand just what kind of shame they've brought to UER, and if the fame was worth it.

Just my two cents: I am more curious as to the different articles that are published, with local input, about local explorers, than about the semantics. Every reporter has their angle that they choose to cover, and most of them have a conceptual thought of what they want to go after before they even greet you.

I've given one too many interviews for the media, and not one of them I regret because I controlled what I said. They wanted some thrilling expedition and I gave them history. They wanted run-away-from-cop stories and I gave them how I cooperated with a lot of property owners and respected their rights and boundaries. Nothing too thrilling, really.

I'm not pitching that this article was incorrect or awful. But it's a good lesson to be learned if what you said was taken for full value and then some without that being your intention. If you told the reporter that you explored abandoned buildings without permission, they will think that you broke in and trespassed - that's how it's usually conveyed in the media, so why change it? I play it safe - you don't want a record, after all.

I guess my only criticism of the article is in regards to the LG&E Paddy Run power station. Not only should those details have been left out, but it should have not even been mentioned. The place has motion sensors, motion sensing cameras and is fairly well sealed up. There is an active power plant next to it, and it is only a stone's throw away from major chemical plants. I know that the Louisville explorers are well aware of the risks there, but it's going to be bad news if a caravan of kids pulls up to the gates and walks right in and causes havoc - and then blames the article and the explorers.

Plus, jurisdiction of criminal matter at the power plant has been transferred to the Department of Homeland Security

For what it's worth, hat tip on the article mention!

You've spelled out pretty well how I feel about this. I wasn't absolutely against an article, but I wanted to go about it carefully and take every step to make sure it was done right. I would have approached it very similarly to how you have.
I wouldn't have considered for a second taking the reporter into a location, and Dante and Panda took two reporters to two locations, just to get their alias printed in a free magazine. And what was the price? Now we're "deviants" doing this for "leisure." Now, I'm a crowbar-toting deviant.
What hurts me the most is the deception they resorted to. Dante approached me with the idea of the article and I told him that we need to slow down and do it cautiously, to make sure that the article wouldn't come out like it did. But he did this behind my back, and I'm sure the rest of you won't find empathy difficult. I'm hurt that my friend would do this to me after I carefully advised him on the inherent risks.

For the record, the incident that was written about didn't occur at Paddy's Run.

I advised them against this. And they did it behind my back. I had no part in this and I'm sorry it mentions UER.

As someone who's given enough interviews and turned down more, I have to say one thing I learned about the media is that when a reporter wants to do a story on something, they are going to whether you help or not.

By giving the interview, you provide a certain level of control over the information and slant of the story. When you say no, they go looking for someone else. One particular interview request I turned down ended up with the reporter finding an "explorer" that was happy to do the interview and explain how he broke into all sorts of places and took anything interesting, some things he'd keep, others he'd take to sell. That story hurt the image of UE, making it just look like B&E for profit.

That experience taught me that most times it was better to do it yourself if you're concerned about how you're regarded the best way to protect that is to take matters in your own hands and guide the story and public perception.

The article "your people" participated in wasn't the best, but certainly wasn't the worst...

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

"Panda and Dante’s legs, thin from hours of exploration, start a percussive beat as we climb three floors of metal stairs in single file. A breeze sneaks through windows with veins of shattered glass."

it took a cocktail of 2 parts Cormac McCarthy, 1 part Vonnegut, a splash of Murakami to get the taste of that out of my mouth.

Yeah, I, too, hated the over-descriptive nature of the article. It was pretty full of little off-topic details that dumbed it down and lengthened it (i honestly skimmed the latter half, it was so long). The mashed-potato quote was just ridiculous and had nothing to do with anything, as did mentioning their college majors or the fact Panda used to play World of Warcraft or whatever. The way it was written seemed like some sort of fictional trio ("Dante is admittedly paranoid. Panda is more practical. And then there’s Eschaton — agile as a spider, resourceful as MacGyver. "? What is this, the Powerpuff Girls?). It's partially content, but also partially the dialogue. There's an editing of content that clearly never really happened.

Your need to be recognized has pretty much made the rest of us look like shit and to quote Ninj the way you did was absolutely fucking wrong.

The reporter found that on UER. I didn't tell her that

We haven't been part of your team for months now. You can't kick us out of a group that doesn't exist. Anyone, if any, that goes out with you would gladly tag along with the both of us as well.

That entire story of exactly what happened that night could be seen by anyone with a public access on UER.

And to Eschaton. Mybe if you would have just gone along with Dante on this from the beginning you could have supervised everything and made sure everything went smoothly. I never once heard anything about taking it slow or anything like that. It was a direct no. You can't tell 2 people who you leave out of your explorations all the time no. We weren't even really in your group anymore and you knew that. You had no authority over us. All because you appoint yourself leader doesn't make you one.

i'm pretty sure the writer of the article wouldn't describe Eschaton as a "mcguyver of ue" or whatever if you hadn't told her so. Obviously you had a very high respect for him at the time this was written, and his true feelings about you and your disrespect for the release of location/explorer information is what made you change your mind and suddenly think he was a horrible person. so you're kicking him out of your little group for being uninvolved in this unfortunate article? I think it should be the opposite.

P.S. learn to condense quotes/posts.

I'm pretty sure very few people other than writers would say such a thing. It seems exactly like something this writer would have made up, based on other quotes and the overall tone of the article.

Not saying I disagree with the rest of your post though.

I think that Panda is in the right here, she had no idea that this reporter was going to write it like this. She tried to show somebody urbexing, and she succeeded. As for the article, cops will read it, step up enforcement and then go back to doing nothing after they realize urban explorers aren't doing any harm. Moreover, look on the bright side, URBEX GOT A COVER STORY! This reached a lot of new people and let them know that we exist. So yeah, bad stuff happened, but she meant good and did plenty of it.
