I thought that I would post some pictures from Gary. It was the first time that I did anything related to UE and it's safe to say that I am now addicted.

Nice pics, Java!

I recognize most of those places, but I don't recall ever seeing that mannequin before. Is that at the palace theater?

Also, I don't recognize the last picture at all. Some place I haven't been?

Yeah the mannequin was from the theatre. The last picture was in the post office lobby. With the exception of the picture that I posted, the PO wasn't as entertaining as the other places we went to.

Aha! Now I recognize it as the Post Office. I've been there lots of times. I love that place too. The lighting of the picture threw me off, I think. It looked like it was an outdoor shot at first.

The post office is cool once you find access to the security lookouts over the sorting room and lobby.

The basement of the post office has some wonderful light and shadow, too- subjects aren't as interesting, but playing with the lighting is fun and can make for some nice shots.

We attempted to go to the roof, but someone in the group got freaked out because they thought a neighbor had seen them on top. I'll have to try that again when I go there next. By then I will have a decent camera with me also.

LOL. I don't think you ever need to worry about neighbors seeing you. At least you never needed to worry about it back when I was exploring Gary regularly. We would have a group of a dozen people walking down the street, cop cars driving past us without a care. A neighbor lady seeing us once asked if we were making a documentary. But then, that was many years ago. I don't know how sketchy Gary is now that there seems to be more people actually living there.

We got caught by the police walking out the door of the Gary post office in 2008. They asked us if everything was all right, told us to stay out of trouble, and then drove away.

One time in the church the cops came in to tell us the one of our cars was illegally parked and we had to move it or he'd have to write a ticket.

Just curious, were you in Gary this weekend? My friends and I explored there on Sunday. That mannequin would be quite likely to scare the crap out of me if I walked around the corner and saw it.

Nice pics! I hope to make it to Gary someday. Sounds like the cops are all right but how were the other locals?

While photographing the exterior of the Palace last month, someone thought I was working for a development company. Otherwise, they mostly mind their own business.

UE is their main source of tourist income.

We didn't encounter any cops and only a few locals. There was one guy waiting outside the theatre and he started to talk with us about Michal Jackson, a homeless man who came into the KFC we ate at to ask for money and some kids who saw us inside the church. I thought the kids (teenagers) were going to give us trouble because as they were walking past they stop and gave us this weird look.

Livestrong: I took these pictures in the fall of 2010. I hope to make it back there this summer. And that mannequin did scare the shit out of me.

Yup. That's definitely true. When we stopped at the KFC to eat, the guy was looked surprised that anyone was around to come in. He looked really bored.

The whole Gary thing was an accident actually. The group that I went with intended to go to Wyman-Gordon Power Plant in Dixmoor but we got stopped by the cops right when we were about to enter. So we traveled on over to Gary and it was still amazing.
