|  | | | Went down to Lynch for a school project and stumbled upon this beauty. There are two old coal mines to either side of the abandoned complex, one now acts as a tourist attraction, and the other is gated up (return visit?). The town of Lynch was started by U.S. Steel for the sole purpose of coal mining and has seen a exodus as the coal mines have closed. I believe there are still two active ones farther down the road.
The first building seemed to be mainly utilized for storage following the abandonment, the rest were truly and utterly abandoned.
There was a silo, unfortunately the only way up was on the active side, but there was plenty more to see. The site was incredible due to its clear progression from the mine across the street to a building sitting upon pillars (similar to a Le Corb building)so trains could come under to dump coal in. the conveyor seen in the picture takes coal to this building and then up through the next bridge and up the hill to the huge concrete cantilever building which has gargantuan (spelling?) endless death pits for holding the coal. Farther up the hill are some more smaller buildings that give a great view back down into the valley (The hill is near black Mountain, the highest peak in Kentucky).
Across the street from the site is an old burnt down fire station which the last few pics are from. As I mentioned, basically the entire town was built for the sole purpose of coal mining so all the main buildings (fire station, commisary, train station, coal buildings, last colored school in Kentucky) are all still there and falling apart. Unfortunately due to my schedule and the sheer amount of buildings I could only see a few. It is a fascinating town and its story is just as interestingas the buildings.

| | | | Sadly, the turnover in the local government isn't helping the case for preserving the town, which a coal corporation (I think Massey?) wants to level to make way for a major MTR site. If you are there, take the time to donate money to the folks that help preserve what's left of Lynch and tour the coal mine that is open as a tourist attraction!
BTW, did you check out the abandoned school in Cumberland?

But yea Ive heard they are trying to do mountain top removal, we also checked out one of those strip mines (they are strange other worldly landscapes), but Ive heard that the state is protecting Black Mountain. Also if your talking about the Cumberland "Colored School" we went through it, they are actually trying to raise the money to revitalize it as a community center.
