Big drain driving
| | | Re: Biggest RCP in the world? <Reply # 1 on 5/8/2004 8:29 AM >
| | | Not the biggest. I've heard of beger ones at Tumut. That's the Geehi overflow, so normally it is not filled. But there are bigger ones, at Tumut there's a 16 meter one. But I am not telling where exactly. ;) I have a friend who's an engineer on that project. She showed me around two of the underground power stations.

| | | Not sure if you'd count them as tunnels in the traditional sense, but the subterranean tunnels at the Superconducting Super Collider in Waxahachie, Texas are immense -- the picture at the beginning of this article gives a pretty good idea. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/DailyNews/superconductor020430.html Heh, guess it's rooted in that whole "Everything's bigger in Texas" thing.

Oh really, whoops, didn't notice, I thought they were different. Anyways, it is reason enough to get a plane ticket to Australia, damn that concrete tunnel is sexy, eh? [last edit 5/8/2004 4:46 PM by Macsbug - edited 1 times]

So when are you going to get in there? I want to see some results! Seriously though, any leads? Edit: just read about the gravel, that sucks [last edit 5/9/2004 8:23 AM by Freak - edited 1 times]

Heh, believe me, I fantasize about the day that I can go by this place. RevSM and Allva have made a few trips inside one of the buildings but haven't made it down to the tunnels -- the DB entry links to a good story on RevSM's site. http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20418

| | | Yep, no such luck in Waxahachie yet. I have been coming across some pretty huge drainage tunnels recently. Stay tuned! ;)

| | | I saw some pretty large sections of pipe being taken northbound (big oversize truck) as I drove to Duluth yesterday. Definitely big enough to walk through they were, and I really would have liked to know where their final resting place would be.

Feh. We've already got one here in Illinois complete with ghost white deer. Waxahachie is supposed to be bigger because they have more undeveloped land in the second largest state of the Union. The Argonne site is a little crowded, but the supercollider works real nice.

| | | Holy Schiza! I would bring a bike if possible, if you plan on exploring many miles worth, the weather could easily change during the amount of time down there, and a bike could be usefull for a quick getaway if needed. Dunno. Sexy!

That's what I said when I first saw the map. I know where some shafts are...but it's a looong way down. It's my long-term goal to get into it someday.
