|  | | | We'll get there. First, I need to give you some background.
There's a major area in front of one of Seoul's biggest train stations that's been undergoing a massive redevelopment.
This is what they're building.
Here's a more dramatic picture.
To get that, they need to demolish a ton of stuff:
-a low-rent commercial district
-a row of highrises along the river, and surrounding smaller buildings
-a beautiful Catholic church
-train yards
-there's also a recently abandoned hospital, but I can't tell if it's for the same project
-and a red-light district
First was the commercial district.
The business owners there thought they weren't getting enough compensation to move, so they protested. The construction company sent their reply with a personal touch...hired goons. That led to tons of graffiti like this:
After a couple years of this, the remaining evictees were fortified on the rooftop of one building. The hired goons were trying to get them out, so they defended themselves by throwing stuff down at them. This eventually led to the use of molotov cocktails.
At this point, the anti-terrorist tactical police were called in to handle the evictees. To prevent themselves from being stormed, the evictees poured paint thinner and other flammables down the stairs, so the police couldn't enter without sparking a fire. The police did the sensible thing and lowered a cargo container full of riot police onto the roof. Guess what happened next!

I think the count was five protesters dead, one cop.
Justice was swift, and the organisers of the protest were sent to prison. Or wait, what's the saying? Justice is blind.
I went back on the one-year anniversary, when there was a huge protest...of maybe 20 evictees. And thousands of riot police.
Here's the building it all happened in.
Absolutely perfect, tasteful place to hang this banner, don't you think?

And I guess this can be for the cop who died.
Anyway, that happened. Also slated for demo are these highrises.
Basically, everything in the bottom half of this picture will be razed.
My favourite protest poster: "Help! Seoul City and Samsung are destroying our homes!"

Not totally abandoned, but I read that business hasn't been so good since the place across the street became the center of public attention.
“They say five people died in the tower across the street, but if they try to tear this place down, we aren‘t going to put up any less of a fight than they did,” said a sex worker identified as “Hwang,” 31, who has worked in the area for several years.
Which brings us to the sexiest thing ever. The prostitutes take to the streets! Better yet, in facepaint and burial robes!

When I was there 5 years ago, I was very much conscious of the heavy police presence. On a Saturday night in downtown Seoul, there were quite literally ranks of cops in riot gear all sat in a shady area nearby, with no obvious reason to be there. I hope to go to North Korea in a few months time, see the other side of the coin so to speak.

Don't judge Korea too much by the police presence. Most of those cops are conscripts who are secretly wishing they were opposing their colleagues.
I've had many excellent explorations around downtown, though closer to the American and Japanese embassies there are too many cops sitting around.
North Korea is an amazing place. I went there last summer through Koryo Tours. Let me know if you are going there.
