| | | Sure, we have an LBD. But there's a lot of junk to sort through. I think there should be a hall of fame. Maybe just for sites that don't exist anymore? Or for all sites? In any case, I think a hall of fame with the top 5-20 locations would be worthwhile and downright awesome. Whattya guys think.

| | | Or a hall of fame for the best explorers (i.e. Wrabbit, kowalski, etc.) EDIT: av is already making a page for the best rated sites in the DB so in essence this idea has already been covered. [last edit 5/8/2004 1:13 AM by Sinister Crayon - edited 1 times]

Aye, but who can argue with democracy? If the community votes a site as best then in the eyes of the community it is best, and whom can argue?

| | | I can understand a "top tem list" of entries in teh LDB, but is there really a need for a popularity contest around here? I believe Max Action said it best with some line about "starry-eyed kids" on the907 board that I can't even quote, so I guess it doesn't matter. heh.

| | | No there are places that will always be well known among the UE community, for example the Australian Drains. I wouldn't call it a popularity contest seeing as its locations competing not people.

| | | As far as locations go, the best locations out there are I'm sure not in the Location DB. Minnesota's DB listings are the weakest of the crop.

You shake my hand, say “pleased to meet you.” Look me in the eye, I don’t believe you. TUI, as long as I’m still alive. I live despite you. Realize I’m not one of your kind, I’m nothing like you. |

| | | I kind of like both of those ideas. I mean, it really doesn't need to be a popularity contest or anything like that... but there's plenty of nice locations in the DB and it'd be nice to have something to recognize them. You could even just have a mod or somebody name a site of the week or something, whatever.

That's the thing... people need to get this idea out of there heads that a tiny star icon under their name, or a good vote in the DB, or some other nod of recognition means something. It's just recognizing a site as a good entry. It doesn't mean that you're "teh 'l33t U3 h4x0r g0d!!!1!" or anything ridiculous like that. That's why I suggest having a mod (or somebody else with experience and time) pick them out -- there'd be more likelihood that they're going to pick out places based on having nice pics, being an interesting location, etc. If someone doesn't like this week's pick, so what... there'll be a new one next week. If it really causes a significant detriment to someone's wellbeing, they might be a little too involved in UER...

Well said. I've put up 27 photo galleries in the ldb so far in less than the one month I've been a member here. I could care less about whether I get a fancy icon. To me the most valued thing is the constructive comments people take the time to add to the individual photos. If a pic sucks...I like to know why. If someone enjoyed a particular image, its also enjoyable knowing what they think. Turning it all in to some sort of popularity contest is subjective. People tend to vote for friends and acquaintances regardless of other factors. The enjoyment is visiting the locations, taking photos to document the place (and the trip)...and sharing our finds with everyone. Not a crown, icon or grandiose title bestowed by a voting system. For the record - a negative critique is inevitably more valuable if its done constructively. I've often found it helps to improve photo techniques. Just my .02 cents (minus applicable federal and provincial taxation without representation)

| | | I understand the theory. In practice it would be a little elitest and I'm sure would breed contempt. The 'top ten rated LDB entrys' is a better idea, but still not perfect as it asssumes that every site is viewed by every one... Whereas people maybe are not looking at sites because they are far away geographically. I for one have looked at NO entrys in 'Azores' yet... But they may be the best in the world... I can't rate them because I haven't seen them. Which is lazy on my part but that's the way the world works!! [I tell myself] ! Numbers do the talking - unfairly.
Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

Weird as it is, I totally agree with Matt. Mutual respect all around is good. Holding up idols is dumb. I think any sort of hall of fame is a really bad idea. Ninj http://www.infiltration.org

| | | I don't see anything wrong with a top-10 for locations. But I agree that there's no need for top-10 explorers. It would just boil down to a popularity contest and I see no good coming of it.
So there I was, in this creepy old hallway... |
