St. Martin Parish, LA- Church in the woods

A friend told me this church stood on some property near her home. She found it while horseback riding.

This church honestly confuses me- its old, but almost like someone restored it years ago- including adding electricity & basic air conditioning, replacing the cross on the top and possibly the roof. Why anyone would want to do that, I do not know. Its certainly not a church people go to on Sundays, its in the middle of a small forest and fields, there isnt even a road that you could travel on to get to it, and its next to this pond/marsh. Through some research I discovered there is also a plantation home on the property, built somewhere around 1850, which was one of 5 plantation homes in the area, but is now the only one remaining. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places as well. Also down the road from the property is an area that was once a confederate camp and also housed some POW's and it was used for training.

Anyway, I can only assume the people who own the land & live in the home found the building and kept it in good condition. I still cant figure out a single reason one would put electricity/AC in it though, so that's kind of odd/creepy/both. The A/C wasnt running and the electricity didnt seem to work so I dont know when it was done.

There is a rather similar church in another part of LA (I will post a link below) so I believe the structure to likely be original to the area. But obviously the one I went to is in much, much better shape than this one I found on the internet. Yet I can not really find any information on the St. Martin Parish church online, at all. There are also grave stones outside of the church with dates similar to that of when the plantation home was built. So far I havent had much luck in finding info on the names of the people on them. There was also one that was so far in the brush that I could not read it or get good shots of it...I might return to check the grave names soon.

Here is the similar looking church in Chackbay, LA. This picture is from 2006, I read it pretty much collapsed in 2009 or 2010.

(Not my photo)

Can anyone make out the first name on this? I havent been able to...the graves were in a lot of brush with a lot of spiderwebs, and I wasnt prepared to get up in there to get super close...I can read the last name- Marcantel

No inscription on the small cross. A baby or child's grave?

The old cross from the top of the building

A/C Vents. Why???

Awesome place and pics. One of the old churches by me was restored and is used for special weddings/events and is kept up with a trust fund that the cemetary association owns. I was gonna guess that but the cemetary is not kept up.

Church ownership is a funny complicated thing, it could be still owned by the district that it is in. Not sure if it is called a district in the Catholic church.

Catholics call them parish's. Our "counties" are also called parishes here, so its confusing.

This is 100% not used for events in the area...

It almost makes me want to contact the owners to ask what the story is, but I figured that might be weird.

If my geography still works, is this area supposed to be flooding soon?

The first name on that first marker appears to be LAURE, I would think LAURIE, but I cant seem to fit the I in there. Just a quick observation. By the way, pretty awesome find!

Parts of St. Martin Parish are expected to flood but where this is located, no. The revised inundation map from last week shows the water shouldnt really go close to there.

Hm, yeah, I might. Maybe that would help me research more info on it if they could tell me about it...I'd also like to see the plantation home they live in, I havent found ANY pictures of it online taken since like the 1970's.
