The town of Sumner, Oklahoma was established in 1893 with the land run opening of the Cherokee Outlet. Originally called Auburn, about 200 people came to the new town on the first day,but within a week the population had dropped to about 100. The town developed as an agricultural service center for the surrounding area until 1903 when the railroad extended a line from Tulsa to Enid, which passed a mile and a half from the town.

A new town was plotted next to the railway and the existing town was moved to the present site. The townsite promoter called the new town Robertal, but the citizens where somewhat unhappy with the name and changed it to Sumner, after Henry Sumner, a business man from the nearby town of Perry.

At one time Sumner had two blacksmiths, a thirteen-room hotel, a stockyard, two lumber yards, two banks, two grocery stores, two churches, a cotton gin, two grain elevators, a feed lot, a garage, a post office and a school. Sumner was at it's peak about the same time the school was built in 1921, when four passenger trains a day passed through town.

Sumner was never a large town and slipped into obscurity when passenger service on the railway was canceled and the primary roads bypassed the town. The post office was closed July 27, 1957 and the railway section through Sumner was abandoned in 1972. Little survives of the town today, with just remnants of concrete sidewalks marking where businesses once stood. The Baptist church still serves the remains of the community.

The school at Sumner was the first consolidated school in Noble County and one of the first in the state. The existing school was built of brick in 1921 as a consolidated high school. The gymnasium was added by the WPA in 1940-41 and was built of the typical quarried sandstone. Brick additions linking the two were added in the 1940s and 50s. The high school closed in 1964, consolidating with nearby Morrison school, but the grade school continued until 1991. The high school wing of the school was shut off and essentially used for storage, retaining much of its original architecture. The grade school wing was modernized over time, as well as the gymnasium.

The old baseball field. Before the gymnasium was built in 1940, the school also had an outdoor basketball court. The high school was in the right wing, the grade school in the left, with entrances and hallways on both sides. They were divided by a central auditorium.

The gymnasium was originally separate, but ended up being connected with the addition of a kitchen, cafeteria, and an additional class room.

The gymnasium ended up being attached to the original school via the rear entrance of the grade school wing.

There was a partial basement, with an unusual loading ramp built in. The room had been used for classes at some point and also housed the heating unit.

The school was nominated for the National Historic Register in 1995, but it appears it was not accepted. The school property is now privately owned and the building is in poor condition.

I wonder what became of class ’35 and ’47? That’s one of the reasons why I love this hobby.

and yes the day will come you shall die here..the day will come when it too will be swallowed by decay forgotten …the day will come they discover and fear the ghost that was once you..** VL
