| | Taking the scenic route to SE Minnesota < on 5/12/2011 3:43 AM >
| | | I'm heading down to Winona/La Crosse from Minneapolis for a weekend. I plan on taking 61 down, for there are several potential spots I caught wind of. Beginning in Red Wing, then through Wacouta, and ending somewhere in Winona or La Crosse. I have a Historian friend who peaked my interest onto fascinating info on mid-nineteenth century abandonments and tunnel/cave systems along the river road. I'm new to the forum so I don't expect anyone to jump at the chance to join me, but I'll put the offer out there anyway.

| | | That's a really fun route, we just did it last weekend for the 100-mile garage sale. Very scenic, I love taking the river routes when I can, the main highways might be faster but I get bored looking at corn and cows. There are indeed quite a few caves/ruins along the way. Some of those tiny towns along 61 used to be much bigger, until the highway cut through them. Nearly every little town had a brewery at one time, and since there's sandstone the whole way, that usually means brewery caves! We found a few just last weekend that I'd never heard of before. Also, Winona has an antique store in one of the old breweries, with displays set up in the caves. There's an abandoned section in the back. Their open hours seem a bit random though.

| | | Thanks Freak, I'm excited. I remember seeing quite a few potential abandonments back in college. I just hope my lead on the caves pans out.

| | | I will probably be in Winona the 21st and possibly the 22nd picking mushrooms but I also plan on doing some exploring. I don't know the area at all, so it should be interesting.

| | | Pickaxe, Even if I don't get any fellow explorers to join up for the trip down, I'm still going. Would you want to meet up at some point and do a little exploring? I should have a good grasp on locations by the time I get to Winona. I know Winona pretty well, but it's the areas along the way that I'm most excited about.
