| | Old fire tower(scouting) < on 5/11/2011 1:42 PM >
| | | On Sideling Hill (western MD) the interstate used to make a long trek up the side of the hill, around a 180 degree turn at the end of the ridgeline and then a long trek down the other side. This highway is all but abandoned due to a newer highway that simply cuts through Sideling Hill near Hancock MD. Any businesses that were on the old road have long since shut down, the scenic view pullover is chained off, and the only traffic is the few people who live on that stretch of road. At the peak of the crumbling (literally!) old highway there is a fire tower with an amazing view (I'd been up there a number of years back). It has since been repurposed into a communications tower. I was going to climb it on my way by, but my visit coincided with a propane truck making a delivery for the array's backup generator, so I had to content myself with a few pics for those who like fire towers. From the other side of the road:
The view from the bottom. Fenced in, and probably locked at the top:

| | | Cool! I drive through Sideling Hill a few times a year, and I've always meant to take the old highway, but I always seem to be in a hurry. I might have to make the time on my next pass.
